  4. Star Mission (Durham 1977?) - Loading

I couldn't actually confirm that this game was released in 1977.  I remember that a friend of mine had one, but that would have been much later than 1977.  Space Mission was available in the JC Penney Christmas Catalog from 1981, which was the earliest reference I could find.

My original thought was to see if there had been a TV commercial for this game, but it doesn't look like it was actually marketed all that much.  However, I did find a hi-rez picture of the box that game came in.  It was on a website that was written in an Eastern European language I didn't immediately recognize, possibly because the table was manufactured in Yugoslavia, but I couldn't 100% confirm this either.  The video is made from the logo I copied from the box (which was higher quality than what I was able to extract from the backglass) as well as the bullet points highlighting the toy's features..  The price shown is the price of the game at JC Penney in 1981.

For the music, I chose the track "Re-Entry" by Neil Norman, which sounds a little bit like it's riffing on the Disco-ized versions of Star Wars that were all the rage in 1977.  Not coincidentally, the track was released in France on the B side of a cover of the theme to Star Wars, albeit not a disco version.  This track seems like the right choice given that the table's artwork is clearly walking up to the line of copying Star Wars visuals while being careful not to violate any trademarks.

I couldn't find a good way to make it look like the ball was actually rolling, but I haven't given up yet.  If I think of something, I'll post an update.

  8. Desert City (Fipermatic 1977) - Loading

This video is a clone of the one I made for "Solar City."  This table doesn't have an entry at IPDB, but it's made by Fipermatic (a Brazilian company).  Due to painful import restrictions in Brazil starting in the 1960s, many of which are still in place now, there were several companies that made pinball machines based on copied designs that were popular elsewhere in the world.  Fipermatic was one such company, so it seems likely that they would have copied a table like "Solar City," which itself is a variant of a popular table design that Gottlieb had already produced in several versions during 1975 and 1976.

The music I used in this version is "Sandstorm" by Desert Express.

  9. Solar City (Gottlieb 1977) - Loading

Solar City is another entry in Gottlieb's series of machines all with the same design around two large banks of drop targets. but with yet another set of artwork.  I guess this game is from before the time people would have used the term "reskinning," but that's exactly what this is.

The video is built from the game's backglass.  Davinci Resolve seems to have a bug in it the way applies Gaussian blur under some circumstances, which is the reason the video has all of the weird sparkles.  I thought about going back to fix this problem, but I decided I liked the way it looked in the context of the video.

The audio is "Solar Flight (Opus 1)" by Mandré.

  10. Aerobatics (Zaccaria 1977) - Loading

The designer of this backglass was kind enough to provide 5 different views of one of the planes on this backglass, so I turned those into animation frames for this video.  The rest of the video elements also come from the backglass plus some stock footage of clouds.  The music is a stock track called "Epic Last Flight."

  11. Argosy (Williams 1977) - Loading

An Argosy is a merchant sailing ship from the Age of Discovery.  In particular, the ship on this game's backglass is a ship from Venice, probably from the 16th century.  As luck would have it, I was able to find a picture of what is very likely the original artwork that the backglass artist used as his source material, so I integrated that into the video.  The original painting is by a man named Gordon Grant, who worked as an illustrator in the early to mid-20th century.  This picture appears in a book about sailing ships, although I'm not sure about the exact title since I only found the one page, not the whole book.

The downside for me is that from reading the rest of the page, I'm now acutely aware that Venetian Argosies were operated by slaves.  I hadn't thought about that very clearly, but of course that's the truth of it.  It's a historical artifact, I guess, and presumably no slaves were used in the production of this pinball machine.

Anyway, this video is made from elements of the game's backglass, plus the above mentioned print and a few other prints I was able to find of this type of galley ship.  The music is "Pavana Alla Venetiana," which originates from the same time period as the Argosy and is performed by the Toronto Consort.
