Last Action Hero Colorization

@Flens Thanks for the effort, I have a majority of the scenes. A few are missing, but if it was this hard to record them, maybe they seldom appear. 

I've uploaded a new version with :

- a lot of new frames for skillshot + yellow colored for the impacts

- a new LCM scene for goto movies countdown for the "add a ball" effect : I will change the colors later (it's my 6 years old daughter choice !!)

- changed "benedict found  /have a nice day" to replace mode... hope the colors will be the right ones

- high score : corrected the shade error (the gradient in the boot screen will end up a bit darker as they share the same palette) + revert the colors back to red for the #position (i was not very happy with the vertical gradient)

Hi @dtatane,

 

yes it was not easy. And you (me at the notebook) could not see whats on the pinballmachine at those moments.

but I am very curious about your work.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to play until Wednesday evening or Thursday.

But i will have an accurate view at all skillshots from me and my family. Maybe i see something that could be missed at my recording.

Its no problem to do new dumpfiles if i know which one. Let me see.

 

I am so happy that you are so motivated and you are go on with this amazing speed.

So have a good start in the new week.

I stay tuned and cant wait until i can play my machine.

Ive had my LAH for just over 1 week now and the development on this project is icing on the cake.  I will video capture tonight with the glass off to address all change requests.

@trueno92,

for the new skillshot scenes you can try some games for your own before recording videos.

 

Please have a look at Ball 1, 2 and 3 and see what happens when you hit the glowing target with each ball at the skillshot.

Are there short screenes of "black and white" ? Ore are they all fully coloured now ? 

Please have a look at the same if you don't hit the glowing target with each ball.

Try to misshit on various letters.

 

Hope you know what i mean 🥴

A few more updates with more colors tonight :

- enter initials

- great game

- "replay" (when displaying the word replay)

 

Some more corrections :

- bonus (mix of color when too long)

- dynamite lit (a few pixels here and there)

- and more and more as soon as I see one while navigating in the project files !

 

I will have to dump the 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 millions screen : do you know how I get them ? 

In the mean time, i'll dump the "LAST" animation when you already have action and hero done.

Ill try to trigger these.  I am not sure exactly what sequence or jackpots get them.  This is exciting stuff!!

Further progress.

 

One note, all the instruction and press start is now grey, not white text.  Not sure if you can apply gradient to text like what you did for high score titles.  May be too much time if you need to paint every letter.

 

Ripper looks great.  Extra ball also looks great.

 

Some scene when launch ball misses the target, it goes black and white, sometimes not, its hard to see the consistency.   I think whrn you miss N it goes black and white, and E does not.

 

 

This really reminds me of the early days of EGA/VGA SIERRA style art used in games like Monkey Island and Space Quest etc.  Fantastic job.  Lucky1 should use this example as to how this is superior to colordmd, when the artist is talented.

@dtataneI will have to dump the 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 millions screen : do you know how I get them ? They should be when you get the "LAH-Bonus". Even when you get LAST, ACTION and HERO. You became various bonus of 20, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 million i think. I don't know exactly why so many different ones.
I think it has to do with the number of balls needed for "LAH" and with which ball.

In the mean time, i'll dump the "LAST" animation when you already have action and hero done.

@dtatane For skillshot, could it be that there are 5 different screens (C,R,A,N,E) for each ball (1,2,3) when hitting the right target and the same process when missing the right target ? If i have understood the information in @trueno92video, i see for example the "N" miss coloured at BALL 2, and the "N" miss not coloured at BALL 3.

 

Summary video:

"N" hit BALL 2 > ok

"N" miss BALL 2 > ok

 

"E" hit BALL 1 > ok

"E" miss BALL 1 > ok

 

"N" hit BALL 3 > ?

"N" miss BALL 3 > not ok

 

"A" miss BALL 1 > not ok

 

...As trueno92  rightly says, it is almost impossible to hit the "C" and the "R" in the real pinball machine on the skillshot, whether as hit or miss.

Confusing stuff. Lets try to find out which scenes are not coloured and i will create new dumpfiles.

I look into details to cover the skillshot topic with the support of the dump files and the videos. Here are the results and missing frames :

 

There are 5 different phases with this gameplay :

1- moving up the gun (3 frames long per position)

2 -swapping before you fire (1 frame per position)

3- when you fire (3 frames per position)

4- when you hit (10-12 frames per position + transition)

5- when you miss (10-12 frames per position + transition)

So I've renamed all the frames and keyframes, and I've checked all the recording I had, and completed the colors of all the frames I had, here is the assessment :

 

- Position #5 : ok, I've got all frames

- Position #4 : 

  • I miss only 1 frame while quick firing at the copter (the gun is not completely up, but you see the the impact on screen. An example on the same frame with position C

- Position #3 :

  • the same frame as above
  • the 3 last frames when you fire and hit

- Position #2 :

  • the 3 frames when moving the gun up

- Position #1 :

  • the frame when you quick fire as above
  • the 5 last frames when you fire and miss

 

If you could record the missing frames, we would get all these animations covered  !

 

@trueno92 I will have a look and try a vertical gradiant rather than horizontal.

 

The titles in white/grey are just a basic coloring of the ROM dumped with 4 shades. I'll try to adapt the gradient to these. I'm just trying to figure out the right way to set the palette in order to optimize a bit their usage.

Picking apart the ball launch may be tricky.  Your work so far nails it > 50% now.  I was wrong on the C R letters on CRANE targets.   I think it depends when the animation starts scrolling... and i dont know 100% if its always the same gun position for the C R A N E target positions.

 

Cant wait for the next updates.  Really wish the editing program could incorporate a basic fade function or copy paste, like basic powerpoint... or even pixlr.com

Maybe you will then see what is still missing in the new creation of  those dumpfiles, ore even better, we have all of them.

It is somehow link to the letters, but what is key is the position of the copter of the DMD. So as long as the copter is in the right position, not matter the letter hit or the ball numer.

hello @dtatane

 

just created new dumpfile.

It is  with 4 players and all 3 Balls.

I have made notices to the missing screens before we began to play.

Hope all of the missing screens will now be in the dumpfile.

 

At the end of ball 3, player 4, after an extraball of course, the game over and the match scene is including.

There was a match and a confusing scene ! Shown was the gameversion and displayversion but not "replay" !?

 

Also in the dumpfile, should be at the beginning, plays the "cousin frank award". I am not sure if anybody has that scene ever before on real pinball machine. Its when you hit the ramp 2 times and then hit the right side of middle scoop. Not easy but the scene and gampelay is so brilliant.

Maybe you can check if its all how you want.

 

Just switch from dropbox to googledrive because easyer and more space.

4. Find benedict intro with lettering, video at 00:01:38 > Letters are less bright... have a nice day when find benedict video at 00:01:42 > looks great !
