I made the game that I always wanted to play...

Prepare yourself for the looming Dark Chaos. You must fly into the maelstrom of oncoming cosmic debris and destroy all you can before it reaches earth. Collect power-ups along the way to help you survive the onslaught of meteor waves. Run training missions to improve your ability to collect power-ups. Make it through the gauntlet to take on the final, monstrous, planet killing asteroid. Our fragile Earth is depending on you.

This game blends pinball with classic arcade concepts. I hope you find the gameplay uniquely thrilling. You will be constantly fighting to survive. The game fights back, so keep an eye on your health meter. There are defensive and offensive power-ups, but only a limited time to collect them, so choose wisely. Good luck, Defender.

Enormous thank you to Flux and Unsavory. So much technical and artistic talent! I really could not have done this without you guys. The game logic for this table was developed using Flux's VBScript port of Mission Pinball Framework which he calls the VPX Game Logic Framework (GLF). Go check it out at https://mpcarr.github.io/vpx-glf/

Setup Notes (PLEASE READ)

  • Requires the VPX 10.8.0 Final release (64-bit) and the latest FlexDMD. Do not report bugs here if you are using any other version of VPX!
  • If you are playing on a cabinet with DOF, please update your DOF config!
  • Please allow at least 20 seconds for the table to load. This table has a large script, so it takes a little time to initialize.
  • Press F12 in the game to open the Tweak Menu. Rules description and game options are provided.
  • If you want to use the FlexDMD rendered alphanumeric display, enable the "GLF Virtual Segment DMD" option in the Tweak Menu. Press start button to save options.
    • You might need to position the DMD with your mouse the first time you enable it. The position automatically saves.
    • For nice alphanumeric display rendering, add the following text to the bottom of your DmdDevice.ini file:
      [darkchaos]
      virtualdmd enabled = false
      alphanumeric enabled = true

Performance Tips. If you are having performance issues, doing one or more of the following might help:

  • In the table's Tweak menu:
    • Disable "Clear Plastic Refractions" in option menu
    • Disable "Playfield Reflections" in option menu
    • Set "Glf Min Lightmap Update Rate" option to your display's update rate
  • In VPX Video/Graphics options:
    • Disable all "Anti-Aliasing" options
    • Try using a different "Synchronization mode"
    • Set "Max Texture Dimensions" to something less than Unlimited. Start with 7168.
  • For those willing to live on the edge, VPX 10.8.1 BGFX provides significant performance improvements. Users say that Dark Chaos plays perfectly smooth on BGFX. You can simply extract the latest build to its own folder and run the exe. But be sure to backup your VPinballX.ini file before trying it.

This is one of the best original games I have ever played! Got the LED’s working with WayOfTheWrench’s advice! Just needed to update the VPU Config as he said.

I did the addition to the dmddevice.ini after copying and pasting the 3 lines in the VPU description but no luck yet seeing that DMD. Then enabled the "GLF Virtual Segment DMD" option in the Tweak Menu. Still couldn’t see the DMD anywhere. When the GLF Virtual segment DMD is set to off, I see the alphanumeric on the playfield on the right side rotated 90 degrees. Any advice on getting the DMD visible?

Response from the author:

It’s possible your DMD is behind your playfield. You might need to Alt Tab to find it. Any other questions can be answered in the comment or support thread.

This is an absolute gem of an original table. The gameplay is incredibly engaging and very unique. The idea that you have a life bar that you have to keep up while playing adds a layer of intensity to the game I have not felt before. Mind you, this is a hard game. I have not managed to survive past wave 5 yet 😅 But as the waves increase, the amount of meteors you need to shoot down increases and you manage to queue up a few missiles to save your butt at the last minute, it's really satisfying. The shots are varied, and as mentioned below the table plays very fast. So you'll need to be on your toes at all times. Combined with the stress of staying alive, you'll need to be in good shape to conquer this table. After a few games, I am drenched in sweat and feel exhausted :D

And while the game is hard if you aim to survive the final wave, there is so much going on, that every game you start will be a joy to play. Even a bad player, will get multiple multiballs served and will trigger incredible light shows and sound effects. It is clear a lot of thought went into the gameplay mechanics and rules to make it a real challenge for good players, while always being fun and rewarding to play for anyone.

The visuals, sounds and physics are absolutely top notch. But the real standouts are the incredible light shows. I cannot imagine how complex it must have been to program all this, but the results are gorgeous. You have to play this in the dark and just marvel at all the light effects, and as I have not yet survived past wave 5, I am sure I have not yet seen the best 😁

Thank you so much for releasing this gem!

This joins an elite group of VPX originals that could/should be real tables... literally every detail thought out better than some real tables I have played. Congrats on getting it out into the world, but most of all, THANKS for sharing it with all of us pinball mega-nerds. Cheers! 🍻

This really is Fantastic, such a clean, beautiful layout with great colors and lighting, very fitting music and sounds, awesome SSF with fluid and exciting gameplay. You guys have done a wonderful job. Hopefully you don't get hired by Stern and we never see you again. :) Table really shines in VR, Thanks!!!

If this were a real table just released by one of the big pinball companies it would be one of their best and I would make constant trips to my local spot to play it.

Thank you so much.

Great Table. Great work.

Thank you so much

A question. The backGlasses for 3 screen option 1 and 2 are the same. Only DMD art section is different. Is it correct?

The backGlass for 2 screen there is no grill and looks like the BacGlass for 3 screen.

Thank you for your great table. Great sound music.

Thank for your new 2Screens BackGlass with grill.

And thank you to keep in a original table a real pinball machine feeling as Ramps, Bumpers, Rails and others toys like a real machine.

Response from the author:

That's correct. Ok, I can add a grill to the 2 screen b2s. Thanks.

This game is absolutely phenomenal. We already love and respect Apophis for his continuous contributions, guidance, tutorials, and presence in the VPIN community.  All that and then still finds the time to create this masterpiece, that will surely be a physical game in the near future. Honored to have been able to test it (I'm not worthy), I was immediately blown away by how spectacular the play was. The thought process and execution in creating this was nothing short of genius. Full stop. The physics are masterful, the light show insane, music is perfect, colors and artwork, sound effects, graphics and models, and the code/ruleset is/are next level. The callouts and apron/eye level game assistance is also appreciated for someone like me who doesn't look at the DMD or read rules(Suggest everyone read the rules). Just listen and keep your eye on the prize. The end result is torturous, non stop, under duress the whole time, FUN PINBALL! You will continuously hit the start button after getting wiped out time and again.

This game is beautifully crafted and one for the ages.

Thank you Apophis for all you do.  We certainly don't deserve you and you are appreciated more than you'll ever know.

Thank you to all of the Team that helped you make this one of the best games ever. Truly epic.

Holy cow this table is so fun and addictive!  What a light show!  The music really helps make playing this intense, it's an absolute thriller!  Graphics,  lights,  music and gameplay are all 10\10. Thank you for this incredible creation.

One star for playfield design, another for art and aesthetics, another for sound and music, another for gameplay and rules, and the last for the build quality and the immense work.
It's challenging, playable, and addictive. As I told Aphopis, it's in my top list of tables I play regularly.

This is really quite an amazing game. The attention to detail at every level is fantastic -- music, lighting, physics. Thank you for sharing your work! I look forward to learning the rules as my first couple of games were pure chaos!

Normally I don't download original tables, but two friends specifically recommended that I try Dark Chaos.

I must say this table is wonderful, truly one of the best tables out there, definitely in my TOP 10.

Not only does it have spectacular graphics, a truly exquisite use of DOF, and majestic sound.
It also has some of the best rules I've ever played.

It's super addictive and fun. It's like playing an arcade inside a pinball.

Congratulations and thank you!

I can write all sorts of superlatives for this, but I'll sum it up in 3 words:

ONE MORE GAME!

Yikes!  What planet did I just land on.

Superb stuff.  All hail Apophis.

Thank you for creating this original table. It’s very well made and a real pleasure to discover and play. Great work and much appreciated!

I played it properly for the first time today, and what can I say: this is a table you just can’t stop playing. It’s addictive, and you constantly want to try again and again to survive just one more wave or test out a different strategy. Insanely fun and very intensive!!

I honestly couldn’t stop playing just now, but since it’s already the middle of the night, I’ll have to postpone saving the world until tomorrow. 😁

Great music, great lighting effects — just an all-around success. At first I thought the table might have rather complicated rules, but it’s actually the complete opposite.

I can easily imagine the real pinball machine becoming a bestseller, and wherever it’s placed in public, it’s going to make a lot of money. You simply want to keep playing it again and again.

Thank you so much for this masterpiece!

No doubt one of the best tables I’ve played - original or otherwise.  The concept and design are genius — no other way to put it.   The little jabs at the end of a game like “Is it really that hard?” are awesome.  The game looks and sounds incredible!   I can’t say enough about this — it is an intense experience.   What an awesome job!  Thank you!

I usually cant be arsed to do reviews for anything, but I felt compelled to drop a line here. Not that you need it, with everyone saying the same positive outlooks here.

I was fairly certain, that nothing would ever drop South Park as my favorite table. Then I discovered that there was a Street Fighter II table. That turned into obsession, much like when SFII:CE hit the local arcades.

And now.....

So far, in the last week, I have not played another table. I usually go through quite a few in a days span. Clue, South Park, Sopranos, KotH, Fathom, Volkan Steel and Metal, Judge Dredd, and a few others. I just cannot stop playing this one. It is damn addicting. Still trying to figure out  some of the shots though, especially left lanes and orbit. Those give me more trouble, even with backhand shots.

Original tables have become so good, I seek those out first, and my top 10 would prolly favor originals over conversions. Well....back to it. I need to make it past the 4th wave today! time to praactice some of those shots I am struggling with

EXCELLENT !!!!!!!!!

Bravo Apophis et à toute l'équipe bien sûr !!

Une table magnifique et avec un grand suspence d'animation et de jouabilitée !!

Merci beaucoup de m'avoir ébloui 🙂

As tu d'autres tables spetaculaire comme celui ci ?

Just recently found this table and my word! It's a work of art! I love how it feels like a physical table while mixing ideas in a fresh way. It jumped directly to my most played table and has that "just one more go" factor in spades. It's damn hard table and merciless from how the return ball timeout for instant drainage is so short to how most shot misses make the ball head straight back at you. But despite making me tear my thinning hairs, it still doesn't let go... Huge props to Apophis for the table work and Unsavory for superb audio work! Love the music and FX on this one!

Clevecavs23

Next Level table for sure.  The gameplay is fantastic and fast moving.  The atmosphere is incredible and the use of my leds's and toys is incredible.  Thanks to all involved in letting us enjoy the fruit of your time and effort.  Will be on my favorites list for a very long time.
