Cabin Fever Has Never Been This Fun!

Step into the role of Jack Torrance — a proud father and determined writer who’s landed the winter caretaker job of his dreams. All he wants is a little peace and quiet to finish his novel, bounce his trusty tennis ball, and teach young Danny some good old-fashioned discipline. But distractions abound: Wendy won’t stop hovering, Hallorann’s asking all the wrong questions, and the Overlook has ideas of its own. It’s up to Jack to stay focused and use his pinball prowess to set things right… his way.

burgereater289 and @GtecArcade present...The Shining!  I had an absolute blast working on this, so thanks GtecArcade for the idea and for teaming up daily!

Thank you

Kevin who came up with half the ideas on this table. Thanks friend!
@outhere- for adding hardware DOF

@DaRdog81 for all your work getting this beautiful VR room set up
@studlygoorite for identifying many necessary improvements
@wpilot- for allowing us to use some artwork from his The Shining table

@LoadedWeapon- for the cabinet POV file and the F12 option to show/hide siderails
Thanks to those who tested and gave ideas to improve the table @Igic,@cl4ve, @Tombg and team @SuperTilted for all their support

Info:

  • One table now works for both PUP and non-PUP (change to usePUP = true or usePUP = false on line 13)
  • Non-VR users can get a glimpse of the VR room on their desktop by setting option vrtest=true on line 10504
  • Press Right MagnaSave at the attract screen to watch the Overlook Hotel play automatically, forever, and ever, and ever (press start during the demo to start your own game)
  • Left MagnaSave to change current song
  • 10.8 required, 10.7 will not work
  • B2S backglass and other media files included in the media pack file., but I recommend downloading Hauntfreaks B2S at link above and using that awesome version
  • To disable UltraDMD, set ultramode=0 in the script.
  • To disable hardware DOF set HardwareDOF=0 in the script
  • To view the PUP,  in the table script change to usePUP = true on line 13, and you will need to head over to GtecArcade's post to grab the PUP Pack: https://vpuniverse.com/files/file/26503-the-shining-pup-pack/

The Shining is one of my favorite movies and I've watched it dozens of times over the years so I'm quite familiar with the material. The fact that @burgereater289 was able to craft a table that not only captures the story, but small details for fans and the vibe...it immediately hooked me! I was grinning ear to ear for my entire playthrough. There are some great moments that I won't spoil here, but you simply must go for the puppack version if you consider yourself a fan of the original movie. I'm not able to put my finger on exactly why, but this table feels cinematic in the same way that I also felt about the previous Kubrick table from the same author, 2001. Highly recommended!

I can't wait for whatever is coming next, but I'm guessing it will involve the Ludovico technique and bowler hats 😁

I loved the 2001 table! The Shining  carries much of the same layout and concept over, yet feels completely different. It totally nails the scares of the film, and I must I admit drained the the ball a few times due to the included  jump scares.😅 Both beautiful and frightening  to look at, and like the 2001 table, plays very well. @burgereater289 is a bona fide Kubrick mastermind, and I would not be sad if " A Clockwork Orange" is next up!

Reading your reply to someone that mentioned the lack of ball rolling sounds (before 1.0.4) and you said "I have a lot to learn". Well learn you did, you have become one of the best authors with the ability to add Fleep and Nfozzy to a table, congrats for that and thanks for this creation, your update is fantastic!

I know very little about The Shining, other than it is based on a Stephen King novel, was directed by Stanley Kubrick, and the famous Here's Johnny scene. Needless to say, I lost quite a few balls watching the craziness on the PUP display, rather than focussing on the ball... can I ever unsee the kissing corpse scene!

Thanks Burger and team for and in interesting and fun, in a frantic kinda way, table.

I’m becoming a huge fan of @burgereater289 tables!

I’ve been playing this daily since I installed. The pup works wonderful and the scenes and music spot on. I absolutely love the modes presented that really bring the source material to the forefront. I was surprised last night when I finally got to break down the door to get at Wendy.

THANK YOU for the hard work and love that you put into this table and THANK YOU for sharing with the community. I look forward to your future projects.

Response from the author:

Thank you, I am so pleased that some folks liked it!! You're very welcome! But,...I can't believe you would do that to poor Wendy!  HAHA

Stellar table, this thing is addicting! Love the whole vibe of the table, and with the PUPpack it's just insanely good. Multiball is pretty killer with the spinning and the magnetic "Correct Wendy" portion is just awesome. Great work, this is top notch!

this table is awesome!  that bat scares the crap out of me when it hits the ball.  Everything is so well done and the pup pack is a must imo. Thanks Burger for making this great table and GtecArcade for the pup

One of my favourite films and this table really captures it nicely.

Very atmospheric and eerie.  I'm using the non pup version with HF's excellent backglass.  Gotta say that the playfield artwork in the lower half of the playfield is stunning

Something I really love about this table - its ability to auto play itself.  Such a cool feature and I wish other tables did this.  I had this auto playing in my cab while I was pottering around the house and it was just awesome (although it freaked the dog out)

great work @burgereater289 and everyone else involved.

Cool table! Although very similar to 2001 in layout it definitely captures it's own vibe. The Vangelis/Bladerunner music is a little out of character (although it works well in 2001), but that's by no means a dealbreaker!

MrRochie

Great table and pup. But how do you enable table bumper and ball rolling sounds. Is there a rom needed? Thanks all

Response from the author:

Thanks, glad you like it! the table doesn't have the ball rolling sounds currently, it was getting up to 10 active multiballs at once and sometimes would crash the table when I have the ball rolling sounds enabled, so I left them out.  I have a lot yet to learn.

Really nice original table, kinda reminds me a little of the Clue table from a few years back.  Graphics, lighting and effects are great, play is smooth, lively and interesting.

What can I say, this thing is fantastic imo.  Tons of fun, for being like your second table.... you are learning fast im so impressed how good you did on this thing.  I think people will appreciate what you've created for a long time i'm proud of you man.  you're a great friend and this was a ton of fun to put together.  Hard to explain but 2001 was such a cool table too it seemed logical to dedicate this table build to another stanley kubrick film, as i love this movie, prolly best horror movie of all time.  I think that autoplay feature totally enthralls me in this thing even harder, it makes it so cool to test with to make sure stuff is working right. Even if you're just bs'ing around the house cleaning and stuff, having the table autoplay while you're away is cool, i love it.   Can't wait to see what you create next, you have my help anytime!
