The Shining (Burger 2025)

Cabin Fever Has Never Been This Fun!

Step into the role of Jack Torrance — a proud father and determined writer who’s landed the winter caretaker job of his dreams. All he wants is a little peace and quiet to finish his novel, bounce his trusty tennis ball, and teach young Danny some good old-fashioned discipline. But distractions abound: Wendy won’t stop hovering, Hallorann’s asking all the wrong questions, and the Overlook has ideas of its own. It’s up to Jack to stay focused and use his pinball prowess to set things right… his way.

burgereater289 and @GtecArcade present...The Shining!  I had an absolute blast working on this, so thanks GtecArcade for the idea and for teaming up daily!

Thank you

Kevin who came up with half the ideas on this table. Thanks friend!
@outhere- for adding hardware DOF

@DaRdog81 for all your work getting this beautiful VR room set up
@studlygoorite for identifying many necessary improvements
@wpilot- for allowing us to use some artwork from his The Shining table

@LoadedWeapon- for the cabinet POV file and the F12 option to show/hide siderails
Thanks to those who tested and gave ideas to improve the table @Igic,@cl4ve, @Tombg and team @SuperTilted for all their support

Info:

  • One table now works for both PUP and non-PUP (change to usePUP = true or usePUP = false on line 13)
  • Non-VR users can get a glimpse of the VR room on their desktop by setting option vrtest=true on line 10504
  • Press Right MagnaSave at the attract screen to watch the Overlook Hotel play automatically, forever, and ever, and ever (press start during the demo to start your own game)
  • Left MagnaSave to change current song
  • 10.8 required, 10.7 will not work
  • B2S backglass and other media files included in the media pack file., but I recommend downloading Hauntfreaks B2S at link above and using that awesome version
  • To disable UltraDMD, set ultramode=0 in the script.
  • To disable hardware DOF set HardwareDOF=0 in the script
  • To view the PUP,  in the table script change to usePUP = true on line 13, and you will need to head over to GtecArcade's post to grab the PUP Pack: https://vpuniverse.com/files/file/26503-the-shining-pup-pack/

Fantastic table, thanks to all for putting it together! I'm not sure if I hit a bug or perhaps just never hit a high enough score but I played for a bit and got like 6M and the game ended. However, it never asked my initials?

It's not a bug, the table saves the highest player score and also saves the A.I.'s highest score, but it does not ask the player for their initials. This is due to my inexperience at scripting which lead me to take the easy way out and I figured in most cases only one person in the house actually plays the table anyway.  You will probably see that high score was saved, and it will display during attract mode (but without any initials beside it, it will just say "HIGH SCORE"). If I make a table in the future I will definitely include the saving of initials.

Got it. Thank you for the clarification.

Hi burgereater,

I am having issues with the non-pup Version 1.03. Occasionally the table will launch properly but most times the table doesn't show. The BG still does show. Using the most current version of 8.0.

do you just get a black screen?  Are you launching from within a front end like pinballx or pinup, and if so, does the same thing happen when launched without the front end? if you alt-tab once the backglass appears, is the table visible and you can alt-tab over to it? this might indicate some sort of focus issue maybe related to front end. Can you try switching  in the table's script HardwareDOF=1 to a 0 on line 63, probably won't make a difference but maybe the LoadEm is calling up something that interferes for you, and changing to 0 takes loadem out of the picture

edit: i was able to replicate this one time, and my problem was that somehow I ended up with two instances of my front-end running. I use pinballx as front end, and I just had to close them both and start fresh. Not sure this is the cause in your case, especially because it sounds like it happens to you more frwquently with this table. My gut is telling me this issue is somehow related to your front end table launcher and I'm not sure what to suggest for that.  One thing you could try it to toggle your backglass settings between form-to-back and form-to-front or vice versa (right click on your backglass, be sure to save). I had a similar "focus" type issue resolved in the past by doing that.

Thanks burgereater. I started having issues with other tables as well. Not sure what happened with my set up. Something went screwy. Rather than wasting time on figuring out what happened I copied over a back up that I made a few days ago and now everything is working fine. I will redownload your table tomorrow and I am sure it will work. If it doesn’t I will let you know. Take care.

Great table!  For some reason I can only get it working with 1 player.

Sorry for the slow reply. I didn't start from a very sophisticated base table that included multiple players. It's only 1 player right now and it's too complex for me to try and add multiplayer (all the settings that have to be stored for each player between turns, the dmd messages to indicate which player is up, how to handle extra ball, saving initials, etc)....I'm not well versed enough to do it unfortunately. I will start from a better base table on my next effort.
