Split Second (Stern 1981) Physics Sound VR MOD

Thank you to jpsalas for creating this beautiful table and allowing this mod!

This is a VPX mod of Split Second, a classic widebody focused on precision and timing. Featuring multiple flippers and a layered playfield, it rewards controlled play and accurate shots—true to its name, every move matters in a split second.

This mod was a joint effort between @studly_do_right and myself:

  • I added nFozzy physics and Fleep sounds
  • studly_do_right did the VR implementation, visual tweaks, and sound polish

Special HUGE thanks to @outhere for verifying DOF functionality after the Fleep conversion. I just can't thank him enough for all his help on every table

Enjoy!

Note: This is a widebody table, so it shouldn’t fill your entire cabinet screen. Leave a few inches of black at the bottom (shrink vertically) and move the table upward toward the backglass. You won’t notice the empty space during gameplay—and the proportions will look much more natural.

Now that I'm getting hooked on this great table, I've noticed that sometimes when I play 3 or 4 games in a row, my flippers start acting funny and staying in the upright position.  I can make then come down if I press the flipper button again but even then, sometimes they don't.   I can restart my computer and everything if fine for a bit but then a few games into it, the flippers start doing it again.   Anyone else have or heard of a fix for this?

I'll look into it. Sometimes I will get that on the first game when I am playing a new table, but that's not the case here. You could try deleting your nvram file named splitsec.nv in yor vpinmame\nvram folder and have it create a new one automatically. I do notice a bit of static sound from the rom audio of this table, so something is a little off somewhere. You could try updating vpinmame or using a different version. the flippers are controlled by the rom when they sense a flipper key is pressed which is another indicator this is somehow related to the rom or vpinmame, but doesn't rule our script issues. I can look more at the script to see if it might be making incorrect calls to rom switches that could be interfering or flooding the rom with incorrect calls to it.

Thanks very much Burger.   I'll try deleting the nvram and see if that fixes it and let you know.   I'm on the latest vpinmame.

It's a really fun table.

Just an update.   I deleted the nvram and it did it again but then I download the rom again.  I'm not sure if it is the same rom but it's the same size.  I do get the cracking at the start of the game but it just on boot up.   So far, I've played about 10 games in a row and it hasn't done the flipper sticking yet.  If it does, I'll let you know.

Thank you.

Yes, still does it.   It's very random. (sticking flippers).     I don't see anyone else reporting this problem, so maybe it's on my end. or maybe they aren't playing several games in a row.  I'll just have to reboot my computer when it happens.  It's happening on Freefall as well.   Not as often, but I do have the flippers stick from time to time and I've had it happen twice, while having good games both times, that the right flipper started to stick and then the game just lost all control and the game ended like it had  tilted but it hadn't.  Still, super fun, just a pain I have to reboot.
