Here’s Williams’ “Winner” from 1971. I saw a video of one on YouTube and thought it looked pretty cool. I hadn’t recreated a table with flippers before, so I figured why not overcompensate and make one with four flippers. I’m sure it’s not a *perfect* recreation: the lighting is far from professional, the slingshot kicks are weak, and I’m not sure the payouts are even working. But the ball shoots out, the horses move, and I even made a backglass file. I think it’s a fun table, so I figure it’s time to share.

I have to thank the folks who built Hi-Score Pool (Chicago Coin 1971). I wouldn’t have been able to make this table work without the ball turret I repurposed from that table. So, thanks to them (and check that table out if you haven’t. It’s a fun one. BorgDog uploaded it).

Playfield graphics redraw, backglass, and the coding for this specific game done by Warbler33 / CactusDude.

Download includes table, B2S backglass, and tarcisio style wheel.

CONTROLS:

5/Credit – Insert Credits

1/Start – Start Game

Plunger/Enter or Spacebar – Fire ball turret

Flipper Keys/Shifts – Corresponding flippers

**Depending on how your default keys are set up, your keyboard equivalents may not match**

**Table is optimized for cabinets. It's possible to play on a desktop, but you probably won't have score reels, etc. If you're interested in making a better desktop version, read the paragraph below.**

For people interested in modifying the table, please get in touch. If you just want to fix a minor issue (fix a bug in the code, etc.) I’d prefer to upload the updated version here and credit you for whatever contribution you make. If you’re interested in tackling larger issues (vastly improving visuals, making a new backglass, etc.) I’d probably be happy to have you upload it separately (and obviously have you mention that it’s a mod or goes with this table). So, please, just get in touch so I can give my stamp of approval and we can discuss the logistics of sharing your contributions. Thanks for understanding.

*FYI I'm Warbler33 on VPF and CactusDude here. So if you notice a lack of "CactusDude" being mentioned in the table's file, it's because I'm too lazy to go back and add mention of CactusDude now. You can read the release notes on Ballyhoo (Bally 1932) to get some more detail on that.*

Released

*Note: Version 0.95's backglass is not backwards compatible with the older version of the table. I rebuilt the backglass and then edited the table to have new B2S commands (along with other fixes).

This whole update is thanks to bord. He offered to render EM backglass images in Blender, so I decided to ask him if he could improve Winner's images. While I was playtesting the new backglass, I stumbled upon a few issues with the table. Here's a list of the changes I can remember making for this update:

- I rebuilt the backglass using bord's image renders! I have to say, it looks pretty nice. It should be much easier to see which numbers are lit up now. Also it just looks much nicer.

- Player 2 is now actually assigned a horse to try and get to the finish line. I don't know how to prevent it from sometimes being the same as Player 1's, though. So, yes, sometimes you might be a surprise co-op mode when you were expecting to go head-to-head.

- I'm not sure if it was an issue in previous versions, by the "1 Up" and "2 Up" light should actually show which player is shooting now.

- Similarly, the "1" and "2" in the '1 or 2 can play oval' should now turn on and off to show if you have enough credits for 1 or 2 players. (I think they were just static in the old version).

- Fixed some bugs with the double space mode

- Fixed the 5000 point "winner target" hit for 2 players. Now, whichever player's horse number target is hit when lit, they are awarded 5000 points. So you can actually score 5000 points for your opponent per hit, in theory. I'm not sure if the real table works that way or not, but I think it's funny so that's the way it works.

- Made a quick non-tarcisio style wheel for people who use those

There are possibly more bugs to squash and edits to make down the road. For instance, the "1" and "2" in the oval blink on when you press down the left or right flippers during play. It's not a big deal and I couldn't solve it quickly, so I'm just leaving it. I also considered adding a sound for when a horse reaches the end, but didn't have time to recheck gameplay footage on YouTube to see if that's a real feature. (And even if it's not, I might still consider doing it later on).  And obviously I only made minor tweaks to the table itself, so it could still eventually use better lighting and more accurate horse primitives etc. etc..

Anyway, it's still far from perfect, but I made enough edits to warrant posting an update. I'll likely be too busy to help with any specific problems for the foreseeable future, but feel free to report bugs or suggestions for a more authentic table in the support thread. If you have clear instructions for actually *fixing* said problems, that's even better. I'll certainly consider your comments and suggestions in any future updates.

Thanks everyone. I hope you enjoy!

Love it! it's such a different game, thanks for painstakingly getting the rules right and updating, this one is a great "who gets the next round" game. #winner
