"Open the coin door, HAL."

2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic sci-fi film directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick. HAL 9000, the machine that murdered his crew, is back—and this time, he's inside a pinball machine. Relive the nightmare through brutal multi-balls and relentless boss fights. Or let HAL play… just press RightMagnaSave at the attract screen.

Thank you
@GtecArcade– Massive thanks to GtecArcade for the phenomenal PUP Pack! His work doesn’t just enhance the table—it transforms it. The cinematic detail, timing, and atmosphere he brings are truly next level. This project wouldn’t be complete without his incredible contributions.

@hauntfreaks– Created a backglass that makes me feel as though I'm at the helm of a spaceship exploring the  universe! Thank so much!

@Tombg – Huge thanks for your expert help with GI lighting, flashers, primitive animation, coding support, and all-around improvements. Your technical skill and readiness to jump in made a world of difference. Je n’aurais pas pu le faire sans toi !

@Supergibson – Invaluable coding support and testing, plus honest feedback and creative ideas that helped shape the final result. Truly appreciated!

@Dr.Nobody – Beautiful PUP overlays—thank you!

@Igic – Thanks so much for all the testing and the great wheel images!

And a huge shoutout to the @SuperTilted group for their ongoing support!

I don't think I should review this table. 2001 is, after all, my favorite movie so I might be biased.
Been a while since I played with pup packs so I had to update (been that long). After that, it's a breeze. I'm not much of reading rules so I can spend time discovering them myself through play so when I saw the monolith coming up it was pure joy.

HAL playing by itself? genius. The Discovery One going around the table, the HAL theme, the sound (such ambient created), the puppack created by @GtecArcade is insane, the layout of the table is really original,...

It is really a master piece that I will soon have to see if I can make it work in VR. Not sure if it has VR since I had to come here to review this, but if not, I hope you add it soon because I think it is a great opportunity to go wild with a VR room 😉 😉
Anyway, thank to all involved in creating this table.

But even though I'm biased towards the theme, I'm pretty sure my opinion is no different from anyone else that plays this table.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

/edit, just went looking for VR... no go, so I hope it'll come soon. In the meantime, be sure I'll enjoy it plenty :)

/edit 2
I knew nfozzy and fleep would come and the pup / no pup is much appreciated too.
Thank you so much, again. Love this one and bias apart, it really is not just a great idea it is very well translated to pinball.

It made me so happy that a true fan of 2001 gave such a positive review, I value all the reviews good or bad, but this one, I'm just so happy to hear it!

Nice work + Thank you! If you're reading this review, please make sure to get the PUP Pack, it takes the table/experience to another level.

Holy HAL! Audiovisual masterpiece just like the movie, I love it👍 The mystery room phase is particularly impressive. As stated by other users before, the pup pack truly elevates the already excellent table to a cinematic experience, well worth it. Many thanks to everybody involved!
Btw, is there a way to change the color of the dmd? I tried by right clicking on it ("customize style") and then setting the color to blue (apply, save), but it seems the color is locked to red.
In case you want more HAL in your pinball, definitely try "FirePower Vs A.I." by 3rdaxis - so good😎

Response from the author:

Thanks for the nice review! yes, I very much love FirePower Vs A.I. too! As for the DMD color question, I will work on finding the answer, it appears others have managed to change the color successfully.  I'll post the answer over in the support thread when I find it.  Thanks again!

Amazing, have loved this film since I first saw it in the Cinema as a kid. Would never have thought it could end up as a Pinball Table but it really works. In fact I like it so much that I have added both the Pup and Non Pup version to my cab.

When Hal plays it on his own though he's much better than me haha.

Well thought out table that really picks up the vibe of the movie, from the playfield graphics to the thumming sound in the background and voice of HAL.  Completely surprised me when the screen popped up in the middle of the playfied with the monolith on it, really nice touch.  The pup pack is a must, really provides that final connection to the movie.  Gameplay is smooth and quick, lighting and graphics are spot on, just a really nice table.  Thanks.

What a pleasant surprise! I love both the original 2001 and its follow up 2010. This table is a great homage  to those films. Excellent layout and gameplay. Love how the layout completely changes when you "battle" the monolith. Multiballs  launching from the flipper chute is such a an excellent and original choice. Makes you feel this all takes place in zero G. So  cool! But the highlight of this game is definitely trying to beat HAL-9000. He is probably still the scariest and interesting villain of any sci-fi media to this day. Love the way "he" is incorporated in the gameplay. As others have mentioned, do yourself a favor and include the wonderful pup done by @GtecArcade it truly elevates the experience. Thank you so much @burgereater289. This table  is a wonderful treat, and makes me realize how much I love 2001!!

A beautiful and inventive concept.  Very playable.

Brillant! "Je sens mon esprit s'en aller"... Merci!

Wonderfull hommage to the original masterpiece, its mistery. The opening on Blue Danube sends shivers down your spine, the use of Hal's lines so judiious... not to mention other revelations. What a pinball machine if not a monolith traversin time? Brilliant! "My mind is going"... Merci!

Talk about transported to another Galaxy. This table along with the pack pack and the VR room literally transports me to another dimension and I get dizzy every time I play it in the best possible way!! I play primarily in VR and this is up there with some of the best of all time in my opinion. I typically gravitate Towards the more "modern" Layouts, However I make for this one especially getting to sort of play against the AI otherwise known as HAL The Gorilla. I always let a game rock out Before I even hit the start and then I compete against his score. Seems to me like the next best alternative since there is no actual multiplayer in VPX.... YET!!!🙏 None of this when I noticed this is a burger table as you have gained quite a reputation as one of the best most complete creators out there. I can only hope and pray that you're cooking something else, But between this,  The Shining and Star Wars, I still have many hundreds of hours, packed w/ nonstop action, thrills, and the occasional easter egg, ahead of me. Thank you brother!!!!!

Loses some points due to lack of DOF lighting

I'm fairly new to this whole visual pinball community and just started putting a collection together and have absolutely fallen in love, but I gotta say this table is absolutely incredible, great intention to detail, the PUP pack adds a ton of extra fun to it , perfectly fits the theme of the movie, and having HAL be able to play and watch him absolutely dominate me was a excellent touch although very humbling on my part haha. i cant say enough good about it. Excellent job and thank you!

lminimart

Thought this looked cool upon release, but got wrapped up in other releases in that timeframe. Then saw yesterday that nfozzy/fleep got added and that was the final straw, I had to check it out... and your work is now *definitely* on my radar! This is an extremely cool design. At first it seemed a little too open and empty but the simple brilliance of the layout becomes evident the more you play. Add in the HAL auto-play and the general atmosphere and feel of the table and you've got a winner. Can't wait to see what you are up to next -- well done! 🍻

UHATEIT

Excellent update man, adding in the fleep sounds sets it off. This table was already awesome before as well. Keep all these sweet tables coming!

Very pleasant table to play in Zen attitude.

But the background in desktop mode seemed a little too empty to me.

Too Zen ?

So I created an alternative one.

I have some minor fixes and I might be posting an update to this table one of these days. This is a beautiful background! can I add this as the default desktop background and mention you in the credits?

What a cool table!  Sounds, images and lights are fantastic, and the ship flying around the table completes the whole ambiance. Thank you for sharing!

If you're a fan of 2001, do yourself a favor and get this table for your vpin collection.

Arguably just as in the film, HAL 9000 is the star of the show of this table, the table elements and design suggesting you're actually playing inside the computer itself, as well as the Discovery One ship.

The real kicker is setting the table into demo mode and letting HAL himself play.  I thought it'd be a fairly simple affair, bat the ball around a bit and that'd be it, drain and game over in pretty short order. Yeah, that didn't happen, what followed was 15 minutes of the most uncanny experiences I've ever had. HAL was racking up multiballs right and left, got an extra ball, even battled the monolith twice and beat it on the second try. Racked up 150,980 over five balls, and little old me just sat back and watched.

Dr. Chandra would be proud.

What a great surprise! Pup pack really adds to the atmosphere, but the game itself is fantastic to play. Nice simple rules, great physics and call outs. I haven't enjoyed an original table this much since Dune and Bourne. I'm playing on a 3D playfield, and the monolith battle blew my mind! Thanks so much for this.

A nugget of gold, at first it's little plain
but it gradually becomes more beautiful and colored 🤩
Great work 👍

Thank you for sharing and introducing me to this table 🙂

Thanks to everyone for making this awesome table! It's a lot of fun to play, I like how you have both movies included with the pup. I also like the USS Discovery floating around the table as we play it. Great sounds as well!
