Desktop player here, my Altsound files sound muffled, grated, basically sounds like 8bit music when they are not supposed to (example: Twilight Zone Altsound 2.0)

For some reason, my F1 does not call up the rom menu.

Here are the attempts I have made to get the altsounds to work right:

VPINMAME setup (and setup64) > turn Altsound Modes to 1

> set ducking value to 100 on altsounds in the Altsound csv files.

> On VPINMAME rom test menu, turn Resampling Quality to 1

> On VPINMAME rom test menu, checked 'extend mono sound to stereo'

> increase ingame volume via F12 or the coin door.

For the very first issue. F1 not calling up the rom menu ... are you sure it doesn't ? That it is behind a fullscreen GL version of VP ?

GL version if ran at fullscreen will not be able to let F1 punch trough. Never the less, you should not need to do this step with the table loaded as long as you know the rom it will be using.

A trick that seems to work is to change the full screen resolution down by one pixel and it should work.

Out of my head, sounds like what you've tried is a valid route though. So, I'm not sure what to try next. Maybe make sure that your Playback output is working as you expect it to.

Right click 'Speaker Output' -> 'Sounds' -> Playback -> Properties -> Advanced and look at those options.Normally you don't want Enhancements or Spatial sound (different tabs, but same place).

Update: the problem does not occur on all my tables. Puppack sounds all get around this problem, i.e., Tron's "End of Line" Puppack and VPW's Iron Maiden Legacy of the Beast.

G-Sound also gets around this problem, i.e., Guns N' Roses and Tales of Arabian Nights.

The typical Altsounds like Twilight Zone Altsound 2.0 are the ones I am having trouble with.

No, I don't use GL. I use x64 exclusively.

Still not working. I went into my PC's Speaker Output -> 'Sounds' -> Playback -> Properties -> Advanced, and did what you said.

I was using 2 channel, 24bit, 48000Hz, did crank the Hz to max, but that still didn't solve it, so I reverted back to 48000Hz.

Can't find the option to change resolution by 1 pixel . Where is this option?

Latest thing I tried to no avail:

vpx launcher > Preference > Audio Option > did a bunch of tinkering in this menu

Regular ... video/graphics menu in VP. Under you screen - just change pr. example the width number by 1 .... 2048 to 2047 pr. example. It may look like a read-only field, but, it can be changed.

I don't use altsound very much, so, I can't really say. But, I would take at least one of those samples over to another computer and play it there. May it be that they ARE low ?

What about Normalizing the samples if they are ?!

It used to be a bug, but, a long time ago that 2 channel 24 bit 48kHz could give you issues. Try 16 bit 48kHz. I doubt that it solves anything, but, worth a poke.

GL is also 64bit btw :) ... you have Regular VP in 32 and 64bit, built for DX9 and then the same ... 32 and 64 bit for GL (openGL).

Help -> About tells you clearly what it is. Version number and what its "flavor". DirectX or OpenGL.

Update: Solved the problem with one Alt Sound file so far: Twilight Zone Alt Sound 2.0.

I just had to rename the Alt Sound file folder from "tz94_ch" to "tz94_h", matching the rom file name for the table I am using, VPW's Twilight Zone table.

If you don’t have matching altsound-rom naming then you most probably hear the original sound, not any sort of altsound.
