Volkan Steel & Metal is a unique game with toggled scoring where some strategically placed targets change scoring to Player 2 (Robert Baron), and others change it back to Player 1 (Capt. Tweed). In a one player game, your goal is retain as much of the "money" as possible. Once a score is awarded, it is retained by the player.

The backstory will help understand the rules and concept:

Volkan Steel & Metal is an original game design based on a late 1800s Steampunk metal factory founded by Capt. Augustus Tweed in the town of Irongate. The Company found massive success with Tweed's discovery that Strontium, when used in alloys, makes metals stronger and lighter. This proved valuable in the development of Steampunk airships, devices and prosthetics. Competitors were unsuccessful in re-creating Tweed's formulas, so their tactics turned ruthless. Tweed's sister, Abigail, naively met and married Mr. Robert Baron while in college, and convinced her brother to hire Baron at Volkan to improve their standing in the community. But Tweed suspects Baron is trying to take control of the Company, or is a spy trying to steal the formulas. Robert and Abigail think Tweed is paranoid.

Your goal is to complete orders for metals and alloys while retaining as much of the Volkan’s profits. To complete an order, you will need Coal (saucer) to stoke the Blast Furnace (upper left VUK) and raise the temperature. You will also need a certain amount of Steam and Electricity for each order to run the factory. And, of course, the necessary ores needed for each order: Iron, Copper, Tin, and Zinc bumpers & Carbon standup. Plus, Volkan’s secret element: Strontium drop targerts. Once everything is collected for each order, the Blast Furnace door opens in the upper center. A successful shot completes the order.

TOGGLED SCORING
ONE PLAYER GAME

Build your fortune by running Volkan Steel  & Metal. Your money is collected in Tweed’s bank account. But your scheming brother-in-law, Robert Baron, will STEAL your money and MEDDLE in your affairs if you’re not careful. Two Baron Blue standups switch scoring from Tweed's Player 1 score to Baron's Player 2 score.  Two Tweed Green targets switch scoring from Baron’s score back to Tweed’s  score. Play as Baron! Use flippers to choose if you want to play as Tweed or Baron before launching Ball 1.

TWO PLAYER GAME
Must be selected before first ball is launched. In a two player game where Tweed is Player 1 and Baron is Player 2, both players can add to their own score and switch scoring to their opponent with the Blue and Green targets. So keep an eye on the center console (apron) light, playfield lights or backbox to see who has control. Player with the most money at the end of the game takes control of Volkan.

Wow. Now this is probably the highest-grade non-PuP original I've played. Some of my observations:

  • Reading the lore is kind of important, but worth it
  • The concept of having points stolen forces you to really aim your shots
  • "Steampunk" theme and Nixie tube displays make this a must-have. There's not another table of this quality holding this theme
  • Volkan Steel and Metal for VPX is relatively lightweight. This table loads into the editor and renders faster than most other new releases in this tier
  • Sounds mesh well together. Regardless of how recklessly you play, it does not sound like someone cut and pasted assorted sounds across a Windows Movie Maker timeline. Your "immersion" will stay intact. Voices don't break the 4th wall, as the what you hear translates to game-callouts
  • General Illumination is done creatively, as lights you may expect to see in a "Steampunk factory" setting
  • The translucent "balls-to-play" tray is a nice addition, which [I think] we haven't seen since the 60s (it was actually "balls played" haha)
  • For people who aren't a big fan of shooting ramps; they're more like "ball transporters" on this one. Flat surface pinballers rejoice!
  • VPX newbies-- There is almost no setup for this table. Drag the *.vpx table and *.directB2S files over to Visual Pinball\Tables\. That's it

Yeah onevox, oqqsan; this one went straight to the cab. Thank you!

A masterpiece ! And surely one of the best tables of the year. High quality audio production, superb graphics, 3D and art combined with an intelligent and well thought out steampunk concept and story. All these things make for a very immersive and convincing experience. What are you waiting for? A must play!

Thank you, Onevox and Oqqsan, for this beautiful creation and all the work that has gone in. Exceptional!

The nixie tubes... the nixie tubes... the nixie tubes... OK, i like nixie tubes :D

But the theme alone... wow... But the overall ambience, the design, the lighting, the sounds, voices, ...for me, it is directly ranked as one of the best pinball tables ever.

I'll play it more once I stop looking at it :D

If This game was water, I'd gladly drown in it.  A Masterpiece dug in from passion and confident design and an immaculate eye for detail. I can't emphasize enough how amazing the atmosphere of this whole creation is. The SSF alone envelopes you with a warm steamy hug and tantalizes you with excitement with detailed metal pings dings and wooshes. The theme is so dead-on it's like it was what steampunk based itself on and not the other way around.  I'm so happy this creation will be loved by so many fans cabs. Brilliant work, and massive dedication to the craft. Thank all of you guys and your hard work! Onevox and Oqqsan Thank you from the bottom of my heart! This will top charts for sure for a long time to come.

Started up a game and instantly people in room were drawn in. The design, sounds, play (love option to cradle in upper playfield) are really new, interesting, and fun. The backglass is so unique (Wylte beat me on nixie tube comment!). Love the SSF too - all the gear and mechanic sounds pair so perfectly with game.  Look forward to getting into strategy and ruleset!

Ummm....what?!  As everyone has already said, absolutely everything about this game can be classified as a masterpiece.  How is this even possible?  I cannot imagine the time and effort it takes to output such an utterly perfect experience.  Many many thanks to @Onevox and @oqqsan for such an original table.

This is no ordinary table...we've got something pretty special here. The combination of a unique design, the voices and sound effects that were used, and the meticulous attention that's been put into every detail here pushes this one right through the rankings to reside alongside of some of the best tables ever created. They had obviously tasked themselves to give the pinball community a real treat to the senses, and the ability it has to draw you into another world during gameplay leaves no room for disappointment. If it were possible to do so, here is one time I would give a 10 star rating. Thanks to the entire team behind this masterpiece for all your time and efforts...and mad, mad respect to every one of you!

Can't say enough about the excellence of this project. Onevox's track record is already impeccable and this is at a whole additional level. This should be optioned for real pinball manufacturing. Congrats!

Who doesn't like Steampunk?  Extraordinarily captivating table with a great backstory and theme.  Hard to focus on the gameplay while you take in the art and features of the table.

Great graphics, great music and mood.  Play is sharp and very lively, you need to make accurate doable shots to work through the game.  The metallic looking balls of different metal types are well done and add a nice touch.

Really fun table that will take many hours to master, looking forward to it.

Thanks very much for this.

Runs out of the box on my 10-year-old PC and is an absolute work of art...and nixie tubes. Excellent work.

Deep ruleset. This will take me a good number of plays to fully understand what to do. Love the steampunk theme, and the idea of "dueling" an in-game opponent in a 1-player game is very interesting.

Great original table, with an amazing atmosphere (haven't had that in an original since the superb  "Voodoo's Carnival").

LOVE the MagnaSave option to view the ruleset (also necessary, because this is a lot deeper than your average pinball).

Amazing game! Thank you guys for all the hard work 🙏 🤘

PS ; one little tip : Pls make the cabinet walls a little higher in a future update, so we can "sink " the playfield a bit more, to let the depth come slightly more alive (only thing I could think of to improve this magnificent table).

WOW!!! It looks like Onevox is singlehandedly bring steampunk back into the conversation!

This baby is luscious, rich and very atmospheric. WOW! Great game rules and satisfying shots. This thing screams COOL. Attention to detail is second to none.

The only thing I take exception with is the name. Steel AND metal? Steel IS metal! As is gold, copper, aluminum, et al. By the way- LOVE the different colored metal balls!

Thanks for sharing your truly awesome game with us Onevox and oqqsan!

The gameplay on this table is just as engaging as its graphics is beautiful and the audio is superb. The game is deceptive in that you feel it plays easily. You have five balls per game and a healthy amount of extra ball opportunities but before you know it, you are on your last ball. You also easily lose points to Robert Baron so you need to concentrate to make sure that you get the points. It gets quite stressful... and I love it!
