Les73gtx Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 If you can get past the corniness of Todd, and watch this through, there are some very good explanations of how this table works along with switches and such. I learned a few things and thought others would find it interesting. Also I love how Todd is getting into the ColorDMD upgrades and other things he hints at in his reviews and restorations. I personally love all the Mods that he does while still keeping true to Spirit of Pinball. IMO
Content Provider gtxjoe Posted December 10, 2014 Content Provider Posted December 10, 2014 Yes, funny guy. His videos are very helpful when building tables
Content Provider freneticamnesic Posted December 10, 2014 Content Provider Posted December 10, 2014 It was a graveyard smash....... (they did the mash)
stefanaustria Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 boah, vpm cant do this colors ? dmd and the man are cool ...
ViriiGuy Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 The company that makes those color DMDs has to write new software for each individual table. So it is not something built into the table that VPMame can recreate.
Les73gtx Posted December 11, 2014 Author Posted December 11, 2014 www.colorDMD.com .... more information at their site. I would like to think that the VPMame would be able to interface with it without too much effort. In fact we are using the same rom programming that they are using and all the programming they do for the colors is contained in their interface module. The more I think about this it may just be a matter of using the on board USB port on the colorDMD to talk to computer. This is all speculation of course. Would have to have one in-hand to play with it and maybe get help from the developer directly. Randr .... didn't you install one of these in one of your real pins? I thought I saw a picture of one in your videos.
Les73gtx Posted December 12, 2014 Author Posted December 12, 2014 Yes I have one in my attack from Mars . . What is your opinion on this ... do you think it could be used as a dmd for our VPMame tables? You use a USB to update it for new color changes from the Mfg right? Your a hardware guy and having one .. in your opinion could it be used in a VP cab?
randr Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I would think I could install it straight up in my digital cab replacing my plasma...but you cannot run just any game on it as it needs you to have purchased the code for game it's installed in. Also don't use high power so really don't see why it wouldn't work for attack from Mars on my virtual.
Les73gtx Posted December 12, 2014 Author Posted December 12, 2014 Awesome .... so i wonder what the cost and additional expense there would be to having all the programming from them ... I am going to look into this a bit more ... might be a nice Christmas present to me from, well Me ... hahaha Thanks for the pictures as well ... so when you going to try it in your cab?
randr Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Not sure never thought about purchasing just the unlock for firmware for a table...if somebody has an idea on multiple firmware I would be willing to test it but I don't see how it would work flashing the thing before start of game unless somehow you ran "all" color dmd firmwares at same time and it just picked correct one. Not many are supported really but more will be. Still no twilight zone
randr Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I will add that I run a plasma in my digital machine...zero setup to align dmd and I love it! I would say at worse case this lcd color option would allow for perfect alignment Everytime for people that currently fight Dmd positioning with a normal lcd
stefanaustria Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 There should be a "Monster Bash PhysMod5" Table ... But the latest avaiable MB are nice and ok !
Pinbill Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 I got a color dmd for Christmas and put it in my Indy Jones. It's awesome! The files for each specific game are free to download on their website. They just released Judge Dredd this week. That makes 13 dmd games "emulated" in color. Not sure if there would be a way to have pin mame call the file to be loaded.
ClarkKent Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 I think the color dmds are too expensive. Looking nice but too expensive. And I learned that it's drawing too much power from the pdb, a separate power supply is recommended very often in the forums. I heard about strange effects in STTNG if you do not have a separate power supply for it...
Les73gtx Posted January 4, 2015 Author Posted January 4, 2015 Hmmm That is interesting ClarkKent, as the one of the main selling points to this neat hardware is to eliminate the need for the high voltage requirements of the original DMD display. Quote; " Low Voltage In contrast to existing high-voltage plasma displays, the ColorDMD uses the low voltage 5V and 12V outputs from a power driver board." Very possible that the existing power driver board in the machines having issues are not up to the task anymore. Or they just could be at the limits of power they can supply. I guess If I am going to spend $5k to $7k on a Pinball machine I am not going to flinch too much at things like $400 for this cool hardware or an additional power supply or even shipping costs in that same price range depending where it is going from and to. Ebay listing Lord of the Rings used $6200, ColoDMD $400, Shipping $300, Tune-up services with LED mods $1000, total cost $7900 close to a new Stern game. Substitute Star Trek TNG on Ebay for $3500 you get a total cost of $5200 ... that is a price I could live with, and I am sure you could find better deals out there besides the over priced Ebay. I was looking at the home page again and the Lord of the Rings video is amazing to me. Now that the holidays are over and things are getting back to normal I am going to inquire about this for my VP cabinet and see what they have to say.
ClarkKent Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 If you remove the plasma displays, of course, the high voltage section is protected - but consider that the 12V section is more stressed because of a device drawing power that is not planned to provide power from the beginning.
