Slick Chick (Gottlieb 1963) 1.3.1

Why is Slick Chick one of the Top 10 EM (electro-mechanical) games voted by players on IPDB (Internet Pinball Database)?

Is it the artwork featuring a barbershop quartet, showgirls wearing bunny ears and an apparently sauced Uncle Wiggily? Maybe.

Or maybe it is due to how challenging the game is. A gobble hole in the playfield center seems to be particularly nasty if you launch multiple balls onto the playfield. Watching fans who enjoy Slick Chick though, they talk about the two skill shots you need to dial in in order to roll over either the CHICK or the SLICK at the top of the playfield. Others say this is the ultimate nudge game and will reward your ability to finesse the ball. Young people seem to enjoy the simplicity of it.

Make sure you grab the beautiful backglass file from @hauntfreaks. It turns the table into pure art.

From @Cliffy Slick Chick-res-files are for desktop users in HD, 2K, 4K and UW (ultrawide) configurations.

The .res files in the zip are intended for desktop users of this version of Slick Chick and are named as such. However, they can certainly be used for  any other table running in desktop mode and uses a directb2s (b2s) with or without a fulldmd as long as the filename matches the tables filename.

They are configured to place the backglass on the right and the fulldmd to the left and are sized for a single player EM. Again they are good as templates for other sizes and locations as well. The # comment lines in the file explain what each line does.

Unzip the .res file that best matches your single monitor (desktop mode) to the same folder as the table. The b2s file also needs to reside in the same folder.
Delete the first 3 characters of the filename, ie, if the file you need is HD-Slick Chick (Gottlieb 1963) 1.3.res then delete the HD- so it reads Slick Chick (Gottlieb 1963) 1.3.res.
Remember, the .res filename needs to match the VPX table name exactly. The b2s filename also must match exactly so rename as needed.

It is assumed you already have a 2.0 or newer version of B2S Server installed.

If you want to use a b2s with a table that has built in desktop scoring I've made a tutorial showing how to do this here https://vpuniverse.com/tutorials/article/32-desktop-backdrops-adding-or-changing-the-basics/

Thanks to @JCalhoun and @hauntfreaks for help and encouragement. Super thanks to @jarr3 for modernizing and adding such great features to the B2S Server.

I'm always open to suggestions that will improve location and sizing, especially since I do not have a 4k or ultrawide monitor to test.

Enjoy!

The late @loserman76 created this table, and over 200 others. The VPX community continues to polish and tweak the games he left us. Here is his original table:

New in 1.3 (details listed in table Script):

  • playfield, cap bumpers, peg color adjustments
  • illuminated bumper base, lighting of lost balls
  • metals, lighting, playfield lights, rubber, wooden rails adjustments, fixes
  • addition/adjustment of screws
  • other playfield adjustments
  • removed high score Post It
  • removed extraneous reflections
  • shooter lane alignments
  • playfield shadows

I got a subscript out of range on line 3133  (something to do with volume.)  This was on the 4th ball of a game

vpx 10.8 is required, are you running a recent version, including the updated scripts?

I am on the bleeding edge with VPS.  Iuse Rudy's reference files as to the latest releases.

I had tried a previous version of slick chicks.  Not sure how many balls I ran in the past, but I had no problems.

I had already closed the table and was remembering the line number and warning.  Later on today I will take a snapshot (When and if it happens).

I am brand new to this, and this is the first game/table I set up (after watching a few videos on Visual Pinball.  I have to say I feel like I lucked out.  Working great (Windows 11 Pro, desktop, just one montior), playing great, and the game is completely charming.  Was looking for an "electro-mechanical" table and picked this one more or less by chance.

Anyway: Thanks much for your work.  Don't know if I would have attempted it if not for my previous experience with Foobar2000 as my music player, but you make me appreciate the open-source world even more.

One question, just checking: This table has no accommodation for keeping score for two players, alternating balls, correct?  Or am I missing something?

Thanks, N.

Correct. This is a Gottlieb single player from their wedgehead era. Wedgeheads are highly prized by collectors. If you hover your mouse over our avatar icon or click on it you will find a link to our other tables, many of which are 2 player and 4 player games.

We're thrilled that you've discovered one of our tables as your first EM. Enjoy the ride!

Thanks so much.  I just downloaded 9 more of your em tables and tried them out.  All so great.  Strange how bodily memory returns.  I haven't played pinball for decades, but some of these are obviously quite close to some I played often in my misspent youth.  I only found one 5-player game (Pat Hand) but the 2-players are all nice.  I'll probably settle on a few favorites, but they all look great.

I don't quite understand yet the back glass thing--how it works for a desktop player.  I downloaded "Hot Shot (Gottleib 1973)" (not one of yours), the modified for 4 players version.  It comes with a .directb2s file, and I downloaded B2SSever, but I can't pull the elements together.  Perhaps I'll figure it out.  I'm a little surprised I've gotten as far as I have.

Again, thanks.  N.

did you run the B2SBackglassServerRegisterApp.exe? That's how it gets "installed". Make sure you're only running vpx 10.8.0 DX version, not GL. GL doesn't allow more than one window per screen.

Make sure the directb2s filename, tablename and the .res file all have the identical name

Slick Chick (Gottlieb 1963) 1.3.1.vpx

Slick Chick (Gottlieb 1963) 1.3.1.directb2s

Slick Chick (Gottlieb 1963) 1.3.1.res

I'm running VPinballX.  Is that the right one?  It's a little, or a lot, confusing, as I count 9 VPinball application files in the folder created by the installation.  I get the back glass with all of your tables that I tried, just as above (except for that banner stuff on the left, which I don't care about).  It's just the Hot Shot, that's not yours, that I didn't work.

Thanks,

N.

And these are VP application files I see (the desktop shortcut shows that I'm running VPinballX):

you can delete the two GL's and just use the bottom one.

I just tried Wildman's Hot Shot b2s and it worked ok for me. This is a solid state game but no matter, b2s server treats them all the same. As long as the names all match you should be good to go. I will say Rascals old table is dying for some updates though :)

Thanks.  I think we must be talking about different games, though.  I was referring to Hot Shot (Gottlieb 1973), by Eduardo, modified for 4 players and dated to this last August 29th.  Certainly looks like a em table.

I got it to work with the backglass, though, on my desktop, by taking this cue from your text on Slick Chick (after turning off Exclusive Fullscreen in Preferences > Video/Graphics Options):

"The .res files in the zip are intended for desktop users of this version of Slick Chick and are named as such. However, they can certainly be used for  any other table running in desktop mode and uses a directb2s (b2s) with or without a fulldmd as long as the filename matches the tables filename.

They are configured to place the backglass on the right and the fulldmd to the left and are sized for a single player EM. Again they are good as templates for other sizes and locations as well."

Looks like below.  I'd like to get rid of the dmd and also size up the backglass, and get rid of the script outside the table.  Maybe I can do all this by modifying your .res file.

Also got it to work with Slick Chick.  You're right, hauntfreaks's backglass is nicer than you y'all had..  But now his overlays what you had not exactly (second screenshot), so I'd like to get rid of what you had there, and also the dmd.  Not sure how to effect that.

Detailing all this because I imagine another beginner might run into some of the same obstacles.

If someone here was even more helpful than y'all already are, he or she sometime might make some kinda q (auite simple template for beginners working in desktop mode, so that we could drop in the table and the backglass and maybe a background (and that's it), and size them appropriately.  Would help with a satisfying start--getting set up.

yes just edit the res file. the size and positions are in there and are shown for each section. My slick chick res here below. You can simply push the dmd off screen. You'll see below in the dmd section that the X position is negative 1350 pixels as measure from the left edge of the backglass position. If you change that to 1920 it will be off screen to the right (for a 1920 X 1080, 1200 screen)

# Playfield Screen resolution width/height
1920
1200
# Backglass Screen resolution width/height
420
400
# Define Backglass using Display Devicename screen number (\\.\DISPLAY)x or screen coordinates (@x) or screen index (=x)
1
# x position for the backglass relative To the upper left corner Of the Playfield screen
1460
# y position for the backglass On the selected display (Normally left at 0)
0
# width/height Of the DMD area In pixels - For 3 screen setup
350
175
# X/Y position Of the DMD area relative To the upper left corner of the backglass screen - For 3 screen setup

# Y-flip, flips the LED display upside down

Thanks so much.  Very helpful.  I'll be getting going on this in the next day or two.  My screen resolution is 2560 x 1440, so I'll adjust accordingly.  I take it that the scoring script he has on Hot Shot, outside of the table and the backglass, is not part of a dmd, but something else, and so won't be affected by a res file edit?
