List Of Vpm Rom Remixes And Mods

Hi, version 2.24 of the unofficial VPM SAM builds introduces some new colored ROM mods for Pin2DMD courtesy of lucky1. In adding listings for modified ROMs, there is no recognition of any sort of "official" mod. Lucky1 needed to add some listings because the Pinball Browser software can make use of the Stern game code's extended memory to store additional display data. The sets that pinball browser produces for a table will have larger file sizes than the original Stern release, so the new mod listings such as acd_168c, mtl_164c, had to be introduced to accommodate the larger files sizes. But otherwise that size will be the same for anyone's modification of the original Stern code. Just zip up the modified bin file, give it the correct name, check "Ignore CRC Errors" under the roms's game settings in the VPinMAME setup menu, and it should play.

A similar process applies for mods that do not make use of extended memory. Then the modded file should be the same file size as the original Stern bin file. Zip up the file, give it the same name as the original Stern ROM that was modded. Rename the old zip and copy over the new zip to your roms path, check "Ignore CRC Errors" under the rom's game settings in the VPinMAME setup menu.

Here, are the download sections for several color mods:

http://vpuniverse.com/forums/files/category/95-sam-color-rom-patches/

http://vpuniverse.com/forums/files/category/101-pin2dmd-colorizations-virtual-pinball/

And this post has a centralized list of links to some mods for SAM tables including color mods, soundtrack remixes, bug fixes, etc. Some of these links go to modded bin files that can be used right away. Others are patches that need to be applied to the original Stern code. Usually it will require bsdiff or Pinball Browser.

Please add any links that you know of to this thread, and I will keep the first post updated. That goes for SAM, but also any other systems too. Thanks!

I am following the pin2dmd development since the beginning and I am planning to use it in one of my real pinball machines. In my cabinet I have replaced the dmd monitor recently and I am quite happy with it.

That leads to the question: can I use the colored roms also with a standard lcd monitor ?

Yes you can but you won´t see any color ! The switching of the colors is done by the pin2dmd interface.

Thanks for all roms! Variety is the spice of life. I have a couple of questions...

What do we do with rom flash?

When do people use older roms? Isn't the latest the greatest?

Would it be possible to make rom variations of the tables that have both EM and SS versions? I would love to have Royal Flush and not have rom sounds. The completist wants ALL variations in the cab, love the little variances in artwork...

Thanks

Rom flash - you can admire the boot-up screen when you use it with vpinmame setup test.

Older rom versions - for people who might want to understand how a game has changed over the development cycle. You just want the latest code? Don't download older code.

EM don't have roms

If a table supported both rom based sounds and chimes, you may be able to select this behavior through a dip switch setting. In that case, you should be able to script a duplicate table to write to a unique nvram.

If there truly were different production runs for the EM and SS versions and the rom does not have the option to play chimes then you may have to script all the events in the EM version yourself to use chime sounds.

RF and RFD are different tables. They share the same layout but were produced years apart. Are you saying that someone produced for VP an RF that uses the RFD rom? Then that's a fantasy table. It looks from IPDB that RF from the 70s was always an EM. I don't know. I run the FP version of RF and that one has chimes.

I spent quite a bit of time modifying several ROM's to color hoping to get color DMD display in VPinMAME.  I just have a single monitor setup, no hardware, cab, or fancy stuff.  After reading a bit here it looks like only the PIN2DMD can handle the color ROM's?

I have one table, notably the new Stern NFL table, that gets color on the DMD in VPinMAME when enabled.  It looks great, so I was hoping to get the same from Metallica, etc.  So, what's up with NFL?  Is that using a different mechanism for colorizing the DMD and is there any way to "port" that effect on to tables like Metallica?  It would be nice to be able to see colors on all these tables that have been modded, if at all possible.

Is there documentation about how to use BSPatch?  I think I am almost there, but I get an error in the command prompt that:

'bspatch' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Does this make sense?  How do I install or use bspatch?
