Difference between Categories and Themes

I'm just curious how everyone treats Categories in a front end like Popper. It has always seemed a gray area to me as you already have Themes and Type which cover a large portion of how tables would be sorted and filtered. Also, Categories always seemed to overlap with Themes to me. What are some examples of Categories that people use?
