Problems updating Freezy

I have a cab with a real dmd running pin2dmd.  It currently works fine, except that whatever version of Freezy it's running is prior to serum support, so I'd like to update it.  I don't know what version it's running because I had to get someone else to rebuild/reinstall components when my cab died.   But if I try replacing the DmdDevice.dll in the VPinMAME folder with a more current one, the DMD doesn't work at all.  Given that it works with whatever it has in there now, but not with a newer version, does anyone know what the issue might be?  Is it possible that the newer dll's require a firmware newer than the one I have?  Just grasping at straws, since I have no idea why it wouldn't work.
