Retro Play vs Xtreme Gaming Cabinets for Virtual Pinball.

Recommended Posts

So I'm thinking of not bothering with going with my original idea of getting a 3 screen virtual pinball machine with 720+ games for £3100 (including pinball plunger, official bally/williams legs and decal art), but I was recommended to not bother with that one and go with a full size pinball machine (VPIN) from Retro Play.

Now this is all fine and dandy, the pinball machines look amazing, and are really made up well...not to mention Dave from Retro Play has replied and said that he would be able to ship to the UK (for around £650-£700 shipping), but I have gone onto another website - Xtreme Gaming Cabinets and this is where I notice that they do "mini" style virtual pinball machines (ala Arcade1Up and AtGames Legends Pinball sized), which is great, so my question to you all is this -

Which one do I go for - Retro Play's Virtual Pin or Xtreme Gaming Cabinets' mini pin?

So to clarify, this is the one I was going to order -

https://www.arcadeland.co.uk/product/full-4k-3-screen-virtual-pinball-machine-with-force-feedback/

Which would have had the following tables -

Retro Play is a DICK.  No machine builder should be including any community created games.... PERIOD.

what about Xtreme Gaming Cabinets?

Are they packaging copyrighted and/or community content - that they don't own or have a license to use - with their tables?

Edit:  Looks like the answer is yes, yes they are.

I dunno. I'm asking whether to go there for a VPin machine.

@Namine, a big part of why the community doesn't like pack sellers is because they personally disrespect the people who make the content they are selling.  First, the software is explicitly licensed to be used non-commercially (VPX) or is being sold illegally (FX2/3).  When asked to remove a table from a pack or site, they mock the person/people asking and hide behind the excuse of "it's not your copyright" but also include explicitly copyrighted material (by Zen AND surprisingly many VP originals).  After that they just say to bring a lawsuit, but live in countries with weak IP laws (almost always Australia, weirdly).

Then, the builds they include are often out-of-date or broken in some other way, so creators get messages from people who aren't actually their "customers" so to speak, and waste time trying to help someone (who doesn't know what they're doing because they didn't set it up) fix something that isn't really their problem.

Finally, it just feels gross to put dozens of hours into something, then see that it has tons of downloads (with no comments or feedback) on a site that you have no intention of supporting.  Speaking from personal experience as a table author and VPW contributor, here.

I know it's more cozy over on the ripoff VPD where you can get purely positive feedback on this kind of stuff, but this is where *actual creators* can be found who want to continue improving the tables/art/sounds etc. that you enjoy on your virtual cab.

if i ever had the money buy a virtual pinball machine from Retro Play or Xtreme Gaming Cabinets i would pick Xtreme Gaming Cabinets first '...i dont think Retro Play isn't in same ball park as Xtreme Gaming Cabinets . if you ever notice when Dave does a YouTube one of his pinball machine he don't like to show what inside that pinball machine it like Dave is hiding something . to me i like to see what inside a pinball machine over seeing outside of pinball machine . and i seen few YouTube video's of Retro Play pinball machine and i thought Retro Play pinball machine was in same class as Xtreme gaming Cabinet  'it far from the truth but anyways i think Xtreme Gaming Cabinet makes best hands down virtual pinball machine you can buy out there only problem is cuz Xtreme gaming is so busy building pinball machines they have a 8 to 10 month waiting list

I think all 3 of those manufacturers  are questionable and including tables / public software is VERY wrong. Don't expect support from these communities for any issues you encounter, that SHOULD BE from the manufacturer you purchased from (but don't hold your breath, they are notorious for ghosting customers after the sale).
I can highly recommend VirtuaPin. https://virtuapin.net/
My friend had one built and he installed his own PC and software. It's GREAT looking.

I am saving up to make one myself, I'm getting some quotes from B&Q on the wood for the main cabinet, and I've already got a PC for the VPX/Future Pinball/Baller Installer (which I'm using at the moment until I get a new PC) and I'm glad these people are getting kicked out of the pinball community for selling stuff that isn't theirs!

Can someone close this post please.

Just thought i'd chuck in a voice on this one.

I am a "maker" and will build everything and I love these communities. I have wanted to make a pinball machine for decades and was set on making a mechanical "coffee table" machine but that is harder and harder to do these days in Australia with lack of parts to get easily. I have had plans on a VPin machine for 10 years but kept putting it off and then everything in software changes and I have to research all over so I was thinking of an "off the shelf" option like Xtreme Gaming Crap but that thought died very quick when I looked into it and realised they are using community made assets that specifically state for non-commercial use and they have that sneaky disclaimer that they DO NOT sell software, only the hardware and include the software for free etc.

This seems like a real grey area because they are doing the work of downloading tables, installing them and I would assume configuring them all but now I have started my journey and designing and building my own system so I can learn all about the way it works, maintain and update it and of course have the enjoyment of making it with my hands I have realized there is a LOT of work just in downloading all the files for tables, testing them, troubleshooting issues and looking up fixes. I highly doubt they are doing all that for the 1000+ tables they recon they supply and then the cost of their machines is very high for the same gear I have purchased for the same task, my build is looking to be about $4k cheaper than their top $12k option, even having to buy expensive parts and they would have much cheaper manufactured parts.

It kind of makes me a little angry TBH than they can essentially take all this work from users and just profit off it, people like that are the ones that hurt communities like this. I mean I get that this kind of thing is not for everyone to do and some want an off the shelf solution but I would imagine down the line when it comes time to update your software or you have an issue it would be impossible to get support for it let alone the fact I am sure they are not donating anything to this or any other community.

If they just sold the cab and parts i'd be right into what they do but they don't even offer parts or cabs as an option, just full built systems and that seems completely wrong to me.

For me, something even like ArcadeLand here in Stoke, UK doesn't do what they did, they just build the computer, build the machine, set up stuff like solenoids and the main pinball startup, then you're on your own, you have to sort everything out yourself - no tables, no backglasses, no DMDs/FlexDMDs, no PuP Packs etc, you're told to basically "Find them yourself aka the "Google is your friend" deal", which I have no problem with at all!

Not sure of the availability where you live but the Atgames and Arcade 1up cabinets make good platforms for home built systems. Not sure why someone hasn't popped out a particle board cut out diy kit that looks like a real cab yet. The arcade1up cabinet looks the most real of the two. It would be neat if soomeone offered similar bare bones cabinet kits that look like the 1up cabs in different sizes, you know with real lock down bars and legs. I know game room solutions has some but they don't really look like real pin cabs. Just need some accents to make them real looking. I know Virtuapin makes a really sweet looking high quality diy kit.

Unfortunately, with the ALP/A1Up, they're very much expensive here in the UK despite A1Up not selling the pinball machines very well, it's about £800 for the ALP (non 4k) and £600 for the A1Up Vpin. It's a shame because had the shop that sells the A1Up Vpin had put it down to £250, I would have been jumping on it and grabbing one to gut and mod itself.

However, I am looking at a different place to get a proper VPin machine built, no PC as I want to build my own decent spec PC (i7, 16GB+ RAM, decent spec GPU like a GeForce 2060 and a 2TB SSD/NVME M.2 SSD) and they'll do the main building of the machine, add in the bells and whistles like SSF, solenoids etc. It's called Arcade Land here in Stoke, and I'm hoping they'll allow me to do that.

Yeah, the arcade1up I got was on sale for 300 USD. Stateside I think the best deal is the Virtuapin kits. Have you seen this guys videos on youtube, Wicked Gamer & Collector?  He reviews some companies which I believe are in Europe. Not sure if they sell just cabinets though.
