Vpinballx64.exe no longer playing sounds, but it did for years!

I checked the audio settings and they are correct. (Both options are set to primary sound driver).  Vpinallx.exe works as does the gl64 version.  I had made a backup copy of the vpinball folder after install.  So I tried vpinballx64.exe from the backup folder and the sound works.  I copied the backup files over the to the install folder and the sound still doesn't work.  Searching mentioned an ini file created somewhere based on where the program executed.  However, that wouldn't explain why both files have the same configuration but only one folder works.  This happens when running the exe directly.

I didn't want to have to reconfigure popper and other things so just trying to get it to work in the directory it was originally installed in.  I've spent hours searching the internet but nothing I found is providing a solution.  I am hopeful that someone has a better understanding of what is happening and can point me in a direction.

Added version
