OK so I have decided to build (slowly) towards a VR setup on my cabinet. It is already set up with VPX 10.7.2 and is running flawlessly. 4K @ 120Hz playfield with 1080p dmd and oldskool 1600x1200 backglass minitor.
Running a Ryzen 5600 (non X) with a GTI 1080Ti gpu.

I do see the very occasional stutter. But so rare as to not really be an issue. 13 ball multiball in Apollo 13 is great, as an example.

Now I do plan to upgrade this AM4 platform as much as I can. So I was very pleased to learn that AMD are releasing a 10th anniversary Ryzen 7 5800x3d later this month. I believe that is the best CPU available for AM4 with large cache?
I really do not want to build a new PC into this cabinet, as so far it runs really well in non VR.

As for GPU I was aiming around an RTX 4700 Super. Or maybe an RTX 5700. My current psu (which does not control toys in cabinet, only the PC) is an EVGA 850W modular.

RAM is only 16GB right now (2x 8GB) and the BIOS used in my Gigabyte board means I must use 2x dual channel sticks. I cannot use 4 sticks. This is some quirk of this particular BIOS that was needed for the 5600 cpu (and also needed for the 5800x3d).
I dunno how much RAM would be needed for VR? It would need to be 2x 16Gb sticks for 32 Gb total.

The headset I am looking at is the Quest 3. Seems the Quest 4 is a long way off right now, so no point in waiting. And by all accounts VR plays rather well on that?

I am in the UK and was hoping this upgrade might be done for about £1000, but that may be slightly optimistic. Even a used Quest 3 from CeX is about £330 to £390 depending on condition.

Dunno if many people are still on AM4 with VR?

Yes, I would need to get a used 4070 Super. I could get a 5070 or similar, but I would not be using some of its features staying on AM4.  Kind of a waste?

A 4700 Super  (RTX 4070 Super) would probably cost far more now than a more beefy recent GPU.

Actually, having looked further seems you are right. Looks like a 5070 is in my budget and probs best going forward to VR.
