RollerGames (Williams 1990)

MrJ Definitive Edition 2.0

Roll, roll, roll, rollergames..

This project was a labor of love and the result of many hours spent improving gameplay, ball flow, lighting, visuals, physics, reliability, and overall authenticity.

My goal was not to reinvent RollerGames, but to make the table play, look, and feel as close to the real machine as possible while addressing a number of long-standing issues present in previous releases.

*A huge thank you to everyone whose work contributed to earlier versions of this table. These earlier versions are available to download on VPUinverse as well!

Definitive Edition 2.0 Updates

Gameplay & Physics

-Fixed upper lock behavior and restored proper Atomic Whip operation.

-Corrected Atomic Whip ball path so the ball reliably feeds the upper flipper.

-Adjusted upper lock timing to provide realistic reaction time before Atomic Whip activation.

-Improved shooter lane and plunge behavior allowing:

-First ramp skill shot

-Second ramp skill shot

-Rollback plunge

-Soft plunge directly into playfield

-Improved Magnet Flip ball flow and reduced rejected shots. [Wait for the magnet to stop the ball before flipping. Tried to time it to match just after the game says "flip"]

-Added realistic magnet capture behavior.

-Adjusted diverter positioning, sizing, and physics to reduce bounce back rejects.

-Fixed occasional airball issue on the second upper ramp during high-speed shots.

-Fixed high-speed left inlane ramp exit bounce that could incorrectly send the ball into the outlane.

-Increased pop bumper randomness and scatter behavior for more realistic gameplay.

-Improved overall ball flow throughout the table.

Reliability & Bug Fixes

-Added hidden wall at the top of the playfield to eliminate a ball-stuck condition.

-Added hidden wall near the third upper playfield ramp to eliminate a game-breaking ball trap.

-Added hidden wall in the Atomic Whip lane to prevent ball hang-ups when multiple balls captured in Atomic Whip lane.

-Fixed rare upper lock multi-ball jam condition.

-Added aluminum wall behind the upper flipper. [Cosmetics and noticed a small memory glitch when engaged.]

-Fixed left SPECIAL insert illumination.

-Corrected several script issues and miscellaneous table cleanup items.

Lighting & Visual Enhancements

-Added custom magnet artwork. [Tried to give magnet a more authentic look]

-Upgraded plunger appearance.

-Upgraded pop bumper appearance and integrated proper GI interaction. [These turned out beautiful in my opinion]

-Adjusted upper ramp transparency. [Helped with lighting effects]

-Reduced bloom for a more natural presentation.

-Refined insert lighting throughout the table. [Reworked all insert lighting]

Reworked general illumination lighting.

-Added supplemental GI lighting to better match the original machine.

-Corrected GI placement based on real RollerGames lighting references.

-Upgraded flasher appearance using modern flasher effects. [These turned out fantastic as well]

-Reworked flasher brightness, placement, and visual behavior.

-Corrected flasher sequencing to more accurately match the original RollerGames machine.

-Improved ball reflections and overall visual presentation.

LUT & Display Improvements

-Corrected GI ON/OFF transitions so the player's selected LUT remains active after GI cycling.

-Default LUT changed to Fleep Natural Dark 1 for a more authentic presentation.

*I'm sure I forgot something. Many hours went into updating this table and testing before this official release. I hope the community enjoys this one as much as I do!

**I do not play in VR so I have not been able to test this version in VR. I play in a virtual cabinet.

Recommended Settings

This table is configured to use Fleep Natural Dark 1 as the default LUT.

Players who prefer fixed lighting may disable the LUT selector by changing the appropriate configuration value within the script.
