As the topic suggests...Are they really necessary?

I am assembling in my game room in the basement as I put it together, because it wont fit width wise anyways down my stairs, due to custom width.  I'll have an access panel in the back of the backbox to access everything and I plan to bolt the backbox to the playfield shelf.  If i need to move it Ill just unplug the electronics in the backbox and completely remove.  The hinges seem pointless to me, but am wondering if I am missing something when I think about just omitting them all together.

Let me know what you think.  Thanks

Real pinball machines get sold, traded and moved around a lot, therefore they benefit from the hinges as convenient way to collapse the cabinet quickly for shipping. Also, if you're building a VP cabinet as a faithful replica of a real pinball machine you're probably going to want them. But for a typical VP cabinet they're quite optional, so as long as you have a way to collapse/separate the backbox when needed I wouldn't concern myself with the hinges. Personally I didn't install them on my cabinet and never regretted it.

You don't need them if you have to disassemble it anyways to move it to another location.

They were meant for classic machines to have a handy mechanics to fold them for easier transportation as @robertms already said.

i keep them for aesthetics only on my machines
