Cannot get new ZeDMD to work

I'm helping a friend build a VP table and cannot get the ZeDMD to work with Pinmame. It just has the spinning red bar in the lower right of the screen. I have the driver installed and Windows sees it on COM3 in the device manager. The ZeDMD updater sees the device, but lists it as non-. The DMD device and I cannot update the firmware at all. It's on 5.14, per the device on boot. This is the ZeDMD produced by VirtuaPIN. Freezy, ZeDMD dlls, and serum dlls are all in the pinmame folder and unblocked. The ini file is setup for the ZeDMD with the correct port. Both 32 and 64 bit pinmames and the roms are setup for external DMD device. I just cannot figure out how to get this one to work. Any ideas? I'm willing to start over from scratch, but the installation procedures for this are all over the place and it's difficult to piece together all the necessary components. Thanks for any help.

I also had issues with the updater, but when using batch file to upload manually all worked fine.

That's not difficult to test - you succeeded as soon you are greeted with the welcome screen on the DMD. There is no software on the PC needed for that, so focus on the device first.
