Calafati Posted March 4, 2025 Posted March 4, 2025 (edited) Hello out there, While enjoying all these really wonderful tables and after some sweaty hours while updating the vpx and pinmame (as complete layman) I still have some questions left, eventually you can help me out with some advise? - concerning Haunted House (VPinWorkshop-version): I have the problem that the flippers in the upper and lower playfield do not work. Certainly this is caused by the fact that I switched the regular flippers to the control- and NOT the shiftbuttons but is there any possibility to synchronize that in the script and how to do that? - concerning Star Wars (also VPW, it seems I like their tables very much 😁): I have no error message, rom is there, table starts but cold and dark. Pressing the escape button after a couple of minutes is causing the message that I terminated the table before initializing? Is there something special with this one? - concerning music/sound effects and coin door: on most, but finally not all machines the END-button works fine but one some (for example Golden Eye) it seems to have no effect. What can I do alternatively? In this context: I discovered that you have to push the music-level on most tables nearly to the end of the scale and then the music quality is sometimes very bad. Am I doing something wrong? - error message: rarely, but every now and then I receive the message "Machine 'meteorb' (Meteor (7-digit conversion)) terminated before initialized, check the rom path or rom file!" (example Meteor-table), but in fact the rom is on its correct place? - concerning the GPU: do you have an advise how I can reduce the stair-step effect you sometimes have on the metal rails? Again, I am complete layman but willing to learn 👍 Sorry for open a couple of barrels at one time but every answer, even to only one of these points is highly welcome. (Sorry for bad English, I am from Germany and doing my best 😁) Klaus Edited March 4, 2025 by Calafati
deadmanworking Posted March 4, 2025 Posted March 4, 2025 Hey - it's probably easier to open separate topics for separate issues at the correct table or topic but some of your questions are quickly answered: Haunted House: the other flippers are operated with the Magna save buttons, but you can change that in the table script (check the description of the table download) Star Wars: there are many SW pinball machines and versions so take extra care you have the correct ROM. A good way to find out is to remove the ROM from the rom folder, then start the table and look very closely at the ROM name and contents the error message gives you. Check the filename of the ROM .zip and the contents, sometimes you have to hunt down different versions of the ROM til you hit the right ROM or even copy individual files between ROMs (looking at you Gottlieb ROMs), it's a detective work sometimes. Coin door / End button: this is only for Bally and Williams tables, Goldeneye is a Sega table so no need to hit END to adjust the volume with 8 and 9 or enter the service menu with 7. ROM volumes: yes this can be a pain if you don't use SSF which makes it easier to adjust the balance between backglass sounds and table sounds. I'd recommend not raising the volume above 26 or 28 as this can distort heavily. Here's a guide to adjust the ROM volume on different system. If the backglass sounds are way too low you can try entering the table options by pressing F12 and lowering the table effect sounds way down to something like 10% and see if it helps.
Calafati Posted March 4, 2025 Author Posted March 4, 2025 Many thanks for your quick reply even on this post: - coin door/music setting is solved 😁 - Haunted House is solved - Star Wars: thats exactly what I assumed - I will check this out piece by piece then 👍 🍻
Calafati Posted March 4, 2025 Author Posted March 4, 2025 Please excuse another question, at the moment it seems you have 100% solutions on my problems 😂 Do you know how to handle "additional sound roms"? For example at SAFE Cracker there exists a ROM named "German sound ROM" and indeed I already played this table in a German Arcade hall. I cannot imagine that this "German ROM" replaces the original, or is this possible? Is there a general rule how to integrate those files in the already running system?
deadmanworking Posted March 5, 2025 Posted March 5, 2025 Sure, always happy to help - as for alternate language ROMs, in theory you should be able to get the German or other language output when replacing the original ROM with the alternate ROM set, or placing the alternate ROM (with a different name) in the roms folder and changing the game name in the table script. This is provided that the ROMs are the same base version. Safecracker, unfortunately isn't the most straightforward example since the table needs two ROMs and also the Unclepaulie version of the table is using a different ROM (sc_18s11) than the older tables (sc_18) which apparently could be made to work with the alternate ROM set as described in this discussion from 2014 - with the VPX table even if you download the German sound file and rename it to safsnds2.rom, the 18s11 ROM has only safsnds3.rom and safsnds4.rom so there's no effect replacing any of those sound files.
