Do you always need an Octo2811 board for Teensy to work?

In my first build, I purchased a Teensy 3.2 plus Octo board which works fine with five strips wired to different ports via Ethernet.

I'm now building a mini which will only have one addressable LED strip, so I'm wondering if there is still a need to get the Octo or whether a Teensy can run correctly without it.  I initially thought the Octo just made wiring easier but looking at the board, I can see additional components so I'm now thinking that it may be a requirement.

Google failed to give me any definitive answer, so I thought I'd ask the experts here :)
