Stutter in plunger lane

I'm noticing that in a lot of recent tables I'm seeing very noticeable stutter when the ball is in the plunger lane, but the gameplay is generally fine, except sometimes I'll see the same stutter when the ball is moving through an in-lane or a ramp (i.e. an element somewhat similar to the plunger lane).  Playing around with the sync settings, switching from Frame Pacing to Adaptive smooths out the plunger lane issue, but often results in unplayable gameplay stutters.  This is only an issue in 10.8.  Never happened in 10.7.  And it's not a frame rate drop.  It never drops from 60.  It's not AV, that's disabled.  Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this and/or what else I might try to mitigate it?
