Adding DOF support to a game

If a developer of a (unity) game wished to add DOF support (Effects, Lamps, Solenoids in the same way a normal ROM would have for effects in game to trigger events in DOF), how would they go about doing this? Would it be essentially a series of commands from the game sent somehow to b2s.server and is there an implementation guide that covers this? 

I'm a bit foggy on what is actually going on in the backend here (the closest thing i could find being the "architecture" page in the documentation which says it's out of date info)!
