Blashyrk
Parts ordered @Lucky1 did you get any colored roms over at pinside? Or do you have any clue how to get them? Are you going to sell the small pcb you are developing for this project ?
Content Provider lucky1 Posted October 13, 2015 Author Content Provider Share Posted October 13, 2015 I received a macro and smartDMD.txt for POTC from a guy from german flippermarkt.de forum. I also bought a license for pinball browser for further testing of the implementation. Here is a video of the upload mechanism using smartDMD.txt palette information copied into pin2dmd.txt textfile. Commandline parameter is section in the textfile ([red] [potc]) which contains the palette information for the different games.
ClarkKent
Have you ever thought of providing this solution for real pinball? The ColorDMD that is sold today is way too expansive (up to EUR 450). With this method it would be A LOT cheaper and, of course, affordable! The ColorDMD that is sold today is way too expansive (up to EUR 450). With this method it would be A LOT cheaper and, of course, affordable! Of course, I'm already working on that. The stm32f4 discovery board should be able to read the serial dmd data that a real pinball machine provides over a SPI input or slave interface. Together with a piece of sync logic in the firmware that detects frame start and number of subframe or plane anything else should be the same and therefore also work on a real pinball machine. br Steve

That would really be a great development! I do not like ColorDMD because of the LCD monitor instead of a real DMD (and, of course, the crazy price). But if I could put such an RGB DMD into my pinball machines for maybe EUR 150 I would definitaly buy it!
Content Provider steve45 Posted October 16, 2015 Content Provider Share Posted October 16, 2015 Well lets see how this will work and look like. Delivery of led panels is stuck at custom checks. And of course I need to get a synchronized image data feed from various pinball machines. I've bot some WPCs and DEs / Segas around here for testing, but no stern. I will post a video when I got something running.
Content Provider lucky1 Posted October 20, 2015 Author Content Provider Share Posted October 20, 2015 Prototype of PIN2DMD is on it´s way. PCB design is done. I will solder the components tomorrow and test if everything is working as expected. I added a HUB08 Interface for other chinese displays and a sdcard reader for configuration storage and easy palette editing from a pc with a card reader. Blashyrk
Do I need that pcb if I'm only using it with vpinmame?
Content Provider lucky1 Posted October 20, 2015 Author Content Provider Share Posted October 20, 2015 Not necessarily . You can also use jumper cables to connect the display.
Blashyrk
Ok thanks, so are the pin2dmd pcb for use with vpinmame and real pinball machines? Are you considering making a pcb for just vpinmame users?
Content Provider steve45 Posted October 20, 2015 Content Provider Share Posted October 20, 2015 This first draft of pcb is a rather general design. It has HUB08 and HUB75 connectors for LED panels and additionally a 14pin connector to use for driving "classic" pinball dmds or you can use this 14pin connector as input to read data from an real pinball as well. Content Provider lucky1 Posted October 21, 2015 Author Content Provider Share Posted October 21, 2015 Assembled the first prototype today. With a little plastic angle it fits perfectly as a replacement for standard DMDs. The controller can be mounted on the back. Content Provider steve45 Posted October 22, 2015 Content Provider Share Posted October 22, 2015 Looks better than the original one as the ugly gaps between the 8x8 segments are gone. And of course you can have any color :-)

Content Provider freneticamnesic Posted October 25, 2015 Content Provider Share Posted October 25, 2015 LMAO looks like the price of the display boards have nearly doubled. Ugh. This project just went out of my price range unfortunately. $122 bucks for the displays, $26 for the discovery board, $27 for the parts, $80 for the pcb is around $250. I don't know what the hell happened to the price on those displays. Unless someone has an alternate source I'm probably out
