Shaker Motor ... Stern And Others

Hey guys, Just a heads up about a good deal on the same shaker motor that Stern and others use in their machines. On eBay right now and there are 10 left ... the price is $8 but I was charged $20 in shipping from Florida to Maine 3 day ... not bad if you ask me. I will have it tomorrow and give some measurements and other info if needed.

Les, are you planning on putting weights on the shafts for vibration.

Frodus, any experience with these particular motors?

Yes I will be making something to weight the shaft .... I have received it today and it seems to spin around 3000 rpm Free spin and has good start up torque. Seems to be a new unit as there was no marks on the com or connectors or shafts. I clicked on the link to make sure it was still there and I see he raised his price to $12 with $21 shipping .... still a good deal I think. I will be making a mount that utilizes both front mounting holes and also a clamp of some kind. I will not have any time to work on it till this weekend.

Here's a couple alternatives from one of my favorite places to get surplus stuff:

12 VDC 3200 RPM JOHNSON PM MOTOR (Dual Shaft): http://www.surpluscenter.com/Electrical/DC-Motors/DC-Fan-Motors/12-VDC-3200-RPM-JOHNSON-PM-MOTOR-10-2632.axd

Lots of lighting options (light bars, strobes, revolving lights, etc)

That is a better find than mine and the shipping seems to be a little less too. I will use them for a couple of parts the next time ... thanks

Hmmm that is something I missed .... no updates as real life and a Mame cabinet build has taken up my time for now ... thank you for the heads up ... I also found some information someplace (don't remember where) that there are many different versions of this same HC970 running different RPM's and power requirements.

I found this while looking at it again ... I believe this to be the one I have inhand.

This is a nice site also ... cheaper than what I paid ... dunno about shipping .... The relay board I have will handle 10amps ... and the secondary PC Power supply is a 500 watt with 3 - 12v rails @ 12.2 amps each I believe ... I will build something in the next few days as I am waiting on some parts for the Mame Cabinet.

Looks like you're right.  The HC970 seems to be a series number instead of a part number.

Installed and working great ... I had to use the config tool for turning down the intensity of the shaker ... now set 5 min to 20 max ... I might go a little lower than that on the max

Overall I say this was a great success as it really feels very close to the modern Stern tables like Star Trek and Mustang.

279f0afeb6e243795ad136d4d497dcb1.jpg the old shakers are behind the gear motor on the left and the box with the solenoids are for the slings ...they were a bit too loud even at 5v.

Looks great.  Do you have a capture DMM or Oscope to see what the inrush current is?

.

Unfortunately no I do not have either ... but the wife and I have been playing all night and no issues at all ... even during the Martian Attack in AFM where it runs for extended periods of time, it is cool to the touch and everything runs smoothly.

Yeah, I like the tapped screw idea also.   I'm using bore hubs now.  While they have a nice feel, I think they have too much overall weight, so I think they 'delay'  (slow ramp-up) the effect too much.   Before the hubs arrived I used some wire clamps.  They resulted in more responsive shaking but weren't quite heavy enough.

Well honestly, I went into my box of bolts from years of working cars and found a matching set. I made another set for someone and included the extra nuts in case your personal preference required more weight

.

Was able to settle on 5 min and 18 max in the config tool.

Hello Les,

So you controlled the intensity of the motor strictly with the DOF min and max settings?  You did not add a dc motor speed controller unit?  I have a similar Johnson HC 970 motor and I think I will try to find tapped screws such as you did.  Nice idea.

Hey edizzle1,

Nothing added and yes I am strictly using the DOF config to control intensity. I am happy to report that after every day playing for the last few months this setup is still working wonderfully. No power supply issues or any kind of failure at all. Completely satisfied with this setup.

Thanks for the compliments everyone and glad I could give back by sharing my ideas.
